I attended a metal fabrication workshop last weekend and i had met a guy there who works for Nissan.
I had mentioned that i owned and 06 Off-road and how i was disappointed that it had been discontinued.
His reply was " Well rumor has it that it's coming back, not only that but the Pathfinder is returning to its original roots". Just thought i would mention this. Not sure if anyone else has heard anything to support this claim.
I should also mention that i brought up my idea of designing and X-terra XL LOL

I'll believe it when I see it. It's a hipster soccer mom market and shiatty crossovers are what sell. For the pathy I don't see them reverting from a money maker to appease a smaller market. As much as I would enjoy it, I just don't see it.

Maybe it is possible? there is a 3rd gen frontier coming at some point in future. I guess i'm just being hopeful..

Ya the xterra will come back as a awd crossover with a tiny motor and a cvt trans , but they will probably try to sneak in a “pro4x” option that will have crappy skid plates and some red tow hooks and some all season tires . On the other hand maybe they will make a awesome diesel version with lockers front and rear and long travel suspension ..... prob not but one could hope

Thanks for sharing Murdoch.

Your Nissan contact said or implied that the WD-21 pathfinder will come back? I would love to see that but doubt it will materialize for purely business reasons. As others have said or implied, small light truck-chassis 4X4 SUVs are not popular with consumers.

Nissan appears committed to producing a 3rd generation Fronterier pickup. That would make producing and servicing a 3rd generation Xterra less expensive.

In passing, apparently the new Frontier PROX-X truck will come with a longer wheel base. That does not sound very serious me. Strikes me as appealing to clients who want to tow massive trailers into the "woods" along with the kitchen sink.

The way "overland" or more quantifiable, the whole increasing interest in being active outdoors and exploring by vehicle has grown in popularity, I'd be surprised if someone at Nissan didn't notice and want to kick the rear end of whoever canned the Xterra. I mean they did a Frontier build as an Overland vehicle for a sort of promotional concept aimed at that market.

5th gen 4runners are selling, I've seen 20+ in dealer inventory lined up along the road. A dealer doesn't keep dozens of a model out there if they don't move. The fact Nissan does not have an SUV in that arena is hurting them, and they aren't idiots, they realize Toyota is reveling in the fact they still have a body on frame, rugged SUV to sell with no appreciable competition.

Now how Nissan responds, who knows. Will it be an Xterra, I wouldn't care to speculate. But, from a common sense angle, I totally see them trying to bring a more rugged SUV back to the market, because they made a big mistake leaving that segment when they did.

I don't see CAFE as an excuse. Other manufacturers make body on frame off road worthy vehicles. Wrangler, 4Runner, Bronco's coming back. What's Nissan's problem?

Pffft.. I couldn't afford one if they did but I'm with others, I don't think the X will return.

In the meantime I'll keep sinking my $$ into the '07 I've got..

It's run by bean counters now who will not take risks.

If the bean counters had their way, Nissan would only make Altimas and Rogues. Nissan used to make some of the most exciting products. Now, I feel most of the lineup just blends in with the rest of the stuff out there.

I'd wager the new Bronco is going to be a completely neutered uni-body, AWD, soccer mom SUV with independent front and rear suspension, and styling ques reminiscent of the early 1970's

Apparently, no other car company has bothered to notice that the best selling Jeep is solid axle, body on frame, that has been engineered to be easily modified, and as absolutely zero competition. As soon as someone does, and produces it, then we'll have something, until then.... keep your X and hope for the best.

Exactly. The Z hasn't been updated in over a decade. The only thing new they made was the R35. Everything else is dated or boring.

And it's a real shame. Nissan needs to get back to being exciting. But it won't. Guess we'll just have to buy old Nissan's.
It's true, sadly. They have zilch in their lineup when it comes to exciting. The z is a slow turd in massive need of an update and nothing anymore for the off-road community. Plus we're now 15 years in of the same stale frontier. I'm honestly not interested in a single thing nissan puts out now or plans to in the future.

Well, the baby Bronco or Bronco sport, or whatever they are going to call it, is going to be based on the Escape (from what I've read), but the Bronco is supposed to be body on frame. I read an article awhile back in which a Ford rep said they are going after Jeep and want to be a big player in the off road market. New patent applications keep popping up from Ford for removable doors, etc which would give the Jeep some competition.

...meanwhile crickets over at Nissan. I don't know what they don't get over there. Ford sells lots of Raptors, GM sells lots of ZR2s and all the Bisons, Jeep sells tons of Wranglers and now Gladiators. Yes, a lot of them don't get used off road, but they are out there for the few of us who do want to get off the beaten path.

On a somewhat related note, we went shopping for a second vehicle, a sub-compact 4-door car with front-wheel drive in 2015. Having had a relatively good experience with a 1987 4-door Nissan Sentra wagon and then the 1993 WD-21 pathfinder, we started the search by focusing on Nissan sub-compacts.

I did not like any of the Nissans we looked at and test-drove. Among other things, I happen to be 196 cm tall, 6' 5" though I might have shrunk a bit in recent years.

I had trouble getting comfortable in these smaller Nissans and did not like my view out the front window and the side windows. I do not recall having this issue with smaller Datsuns back in the day.

Ultimately we got a Kia Soul EX 2015. There is lots of carrying space when the back seats were folded down. I could comfortably sit in the back seat. The Nissan sub-compact backseats were not comfortable at all. The front and side windows of the Kia Soul reminded me of the '93 Pathfinder. Great for viewing.

The clearance on the Kia Soul is low so not good for rough gravel roads or heavy snow falls. But otherwise just fine. My wife loves it as the X is a tad big for her.
