What to do...

Hey guys, in about 3 weeks I’m taking my 2000 xterra on an 8 hour drive up to South Carolina and I’m a bit nervous. It was sitting for about 2 years (did an oil change and all of that) what maintenance should be done before I take the trek? I’m a bit nervous as it has 200k miles but it drives really well. I plan on doing spark plugs and drive belts very soon. Do I have anything to be worried about? Let me know guys thank you.

If you're at 200k, you need to be doing a timing belt pretty soon. When you do the timing belt, do everything else that's in there. Water pump, cam seals, etc. Other than that you should be in good shape.

Okay I’ll probably do the timing belt here as well. The issue I was having with that is that 1) I’ve never done it before and I really don’t want to f*** it up, and 2) when we got the car it had 195k, and I’m not sure the last time the timing belt was replaced.

How many oil changes did you perform over the past two years? One? You may want to use that oil change to flush the engine and do another synthetic oil change before departing on the road trip.

I would carefully inspect the wheel hub and bearing assemblies, outer-tie rod ends, lower control arms and the CV-axles.

When was the last time that you rotated the tires and/or had an alignment? Getting a shop to do an alignment might uncover things that you fail to notice.

It's a chain, and you'd really be better off having a dealer do it, unless you've done it before.

Is not hard, per se, but is involved since you're basically taking the front end of the truck off. If you're not comfortable doing it, then pay to get it done because if it breaks, you can severely damage the engine.

As of its been done before, there should be a tag on the upper radiator support saying when it was done.

Alright I’ll check and see if there’s a tag on the radiator. I did a sea foam flush recently for the oil and changed it with high quality synthetic along with a Fram filter. I’m planning on getting 32x11.5’s real soon because the tires are cracked and worn out. CV boots have a rip, but other than that it seems as though all of the under side is in good condition.
