picked up an Insane fab rear bumper during that GB that pissed off a lot of people. while away on my current business trip, I am looking at fixing a few issues that is pissing me off.

list of things to fix:
- Swing arm hinge: wobbles like a mofo and the bolt ended up seizing in the brass bushings
- destaco latch is seized by the Powder coat
-need to fix pealing powder coat and minor surface rust from driving in a salt bed

Currently researching parts. looking at Comp4x4.com at their hinges. not sure if I should go with their Tire Carrier Hinge Kit with Dual shear Bracket ( Universal mount)

https://www.comp4x4.com/collections...e-kit-with-dual-shear-bracket-universal-mount

or if I should get their facemount hinge

also will keep this thread updated once I start working on this after I get home

Based on what the stock hinge looks like, I'd say that the 2nd option looks more like what you want. It'd completely replace the ddouble shear setup that the bumper came with.

Don't know if this will help or not;

Not due to any kind of faulty manufacturing but because of my poor driving habits and crap judgment when picking spotters the rear Shrock bumper/tire carrier on my truck had a similar problem.

It rattled and was almost bouncing into the rear hatch. I tried putting a wrench on the 1” hinge bolt to tighten it but it will not move.

I emailed Mark from Shrockworks, he sold me a bearing, washers and 1” bolt w/locknut. He also gave me a tool to polish the new bushing out after it got pressed in.

I bought a 36mm socket thinking of putting a breaker bar with a length of pipe on it and broke two breaker bars trying to get the nut off the bolt (one was a craftsman that got replaced by Sears). We decided to cut the top of the bolt and bang it out with a BFH. It did not move and we ended up just flattening the top of the bolt.

We cut more of the top of the bolt off and tried again to hit it with a length of steel and a BFH. It would not move and instead started pushing out the lower ear mounting bracket…not good.

We realized that the bolt was seized to the bushing and that the swing arm was swinging by the bushing rotating within the arm rather that the bolt rotating within the bushing.

We then cut the nut off the bottom off the bolt and were able to separate the swing arm from the bumper.

We put the arm in a 20 ton press and were able to separate the bushing/bolt from the arm.

Old and new;

We decided that it would be good to put a grease fitting in there to keep that bolt from seizing again (good call Misha) so Dave cut a couple of holes in the bushing and I drilled a hole in the arm. We tapped the hole to accept a zerk and pressed the bushing it into the swing arm. I polished the bushing to accept the bolt snugly (when you press the bushing in the ID gets a bit tighter) and we got the arm back on the bumper. Put the zerk in, greased dat bitch, put the spare and hilift back on. Good as new yo with no shake.

One of the issues I've noticed is that the holes drilled in the tip hinge part are a lot buger then the actual bolt that is why ivebeen thinking about replacing the hinge as a whole

Ah, then I agree with Jeff to go with the "first hinge". I like that it's one press bent bracket rather than two brackets. I like the roller bearings and included zerk.

I used the first hinge when I built my rear bumper. It has been great and hasn't sagged at all. The only "problem" is it swings too easily so come up with a plan to hold it open.

@jsexton

I emailed Comp4x4 after finding this lock plate asking if it was compatible with the universal mount hinge.
Pop-Pin-Plate_large.jpg

this is their response:
The lock open pop pin plate is compatible with the dual shear, however, may need to be cut depending on where you want it to stop. Just rotate the plate to where you want the carrier to lock open in regard to the pop pin location and weld in place.
also looks like a buddy of mine is having similar issues with his Black widow spider rear bumper. he mentioned his interest in ordering all the same parts I am ordering. looks like I might be able to fund this repair with some welding work.

probably going to compile the parts list today

keeping in mind that the prices are all in American, it's getting kind of expensive. specially considering that isn't including shipping or customs

so I am thinking of replacing the main beam of the swing arm. cut off the tire mount and the hi lift base plate and re weld it all onto the new pieces. that way I will be able to fix the stupid gab that was a fabrication defect for the hi lift, as we as remove any tabs that IF either welded on or cut their brand in. once I get home and get a better look at the swing am I will be better able to come up with a plan to get this sorted out

opinions about cutting the red lines and attaching them on the new arm with the new hinge and reusing the tire mount, Hi lift base plate ( with adjusting for the stupid gap and miss alignments)?( picture grabbed from another post over on TNX )

was looking at this with these pictures today, might need to remove the passenger side shackle tab and move it. the hinge is 4" long and just realised that the one IF used is around 2" since I already needed to have the bold upsidown to install a shackle I guess only time will tell.

A couple of the nice things that you can do with that hinge bracket, is drill a couple of holes on the center of the mounting plate so you can plug weld it to the bumper along with the border of the bracket.

Second thing is that you have room to put a couple of additional gussets on the bottom to help prevent any twisting of the hinge.

I live my life by the slogan " if you can build it, you can over build it"

Was already planning on adding a couple gussets. Not quite tracking what you mean about plug welding the bracket

the flat spot on the back of the bracket where it welds to the bumper,
You can drill a couple of holes in the center so that you can have a greater area to weld the bracket to the bumper.

Not only did I have approx 1/4” play in the top of the hinge. The bolt was seized in the bushings. Making it I tresting to try and remove the swing arm from the truck but I got it off

So so you cut your tire carrier off (said in total disbelief as I wipe the tear from my eye)? Are you going to at least rebuild it so it better than before?
yes as you can see in previous posts, I have already acquired the new hinge pieces, and will be reusing some of the parts from the old swing arm. just ran out of time today and had to go cook some dinner for the kids. more pics to follow next time. I had allot of play in the original swing arm hinge. I've always had to lift the entire swing arm over an inch to be able to close it. and as I drove down the road It would bounce around and raddled like you wouldn't believe.

Well finished as much of the swing arm as possible between the rain and kids. Will post pics up after dinner once the kids are asleep

as promised here are the last few pics I took for today.
things left to complete:
- remove old Destaco latch (the mechanism is starting to seize due to it being powder coated with the rest of the bumper)
-relocate trailer wiring harness plug
-remove entire bumper to sand, prime and Bedline.( I was able to remove the powder coat in large pieces)
