Hey XN'ers

Im looking for members that may own the Midland 75-822 CB radio or the Cobra 75.
Im looking to add this CB or the Cobra 75 to KGB's Xterra. I like the idea that this can be a hand held or in car CB radio..

Dave, it has been my experience over the years with CB's that they all are pretty much the same. The differences are based on individual likes and use. What some people forget to check out is the upkeep factors. What I've found useful is to talk to a radio techie to findout what are the potential costs to fix it incase something goes wrong. Unless the owner has the know-how. Persoanally I like Cobra products, they've never let me down.

I have always used Cobra.. I like the idea that the Midland can be portable.. This could be useful in the nXm Rock challenge ;)

Iirc the cobra can't be a stand alone unit, but it does have weather and with 2 ant. Boxes in 2 different rigs you can swap the hand unit. I have the cobra and I like it used it for Moab and when on the highway. The weather on it is pretty handy as well.

The ability to remove the radio from the truck is intriguing...for our uses, that would be handy for group trail rides, when you have to get out and spot. Otherwise, the Cora's been good so far

The stand a lone thing was just a plus.. I like the idea that these both are small... and require very little space in the Xterra

Sean is right, it's one of those things you have to decide do you want hand held ability or weather? I pondered both of these as well before purchasing mine

I've had the cobra on a couple vehicles I've owned. But if I had to do over I am intrigued by the midland. But, I will put in a vote for the cobra. I will try to post some photos of my setup later on tonight. I hope those will help you decide.

Just saw this... probably a good choice I like that it can be used as a handheld. When you start shopping for antenna mounts if you haven't already look into the k400-3/8c cant recall who makes it right now but you should be able to Google search that and find it.

Thank you sir... I have a firestik mount already.. I have had great luck with those on my other 2 Xterra builds..

Yeah in the end it was the easy of plug and play that won me over.. I have read some great reviews on this too...

Since this will be going in the Family Xterra I figured plug and play was better..

Great choice I love my Midland. I've wheeled with people that have that Cobra radio a lot of feed back and channel noise. When my Midland has been perfect. Though I suppose antennas play the largest role. The only issue I have had with the Midland is that the back has a belt clip rather then the typical handset hook. Been thinking of installing a super magnet behind a dash panel to allow it to hang up easily. Though I suppose it would be super easy to buy the typical radio hook and catch and mount it to the metal belt clip. I only use the cb when wheeling in a group (rare) otherwise the radio and mag mount antenna lay in the garage.

Thats one reason why I went with this one... I dont mind drilling holes ;)
But I like the idea of hiding this one.. Only thing ill need to hide is the cable to the antenna..

Easy to hide cables in the xterra. I just did this for my backup camera a bit ago. The panels pop off or allows you enough room to slide cables between. Easy.

Hey Dave, anything to report on this? You intended it for the 2nd gen right?

I'm currently in the same debate over the same 2 radios. I was leaning heavily toward the Cobra, as it's a nice completely hidden install.

However the Midland now is gaining favor is it would make a perfect unit to get dual use from between my X and Bronco, no need to buy a 2nd CB, just an antenna install, at least in the short term, less I find I need a CB in the vehicle and hand off the Midland to a spotter.

Specifically, does it clutter up much? Part of my initial preference for the Cobra was getting all cables out of sight under the center console, with the Midland unit I'd have to plug it in the 12v port, and have an antenna cord dangling out somewhere. If I want to run an aux cable to the head unit I have a 3rd cord.

I haven't installed it yet.. I have been waiting on the weather to warm up.. I hate cold..

This radio is pretty nice from what I can tell.. I like that it will run off batteries and work as a stand alone cb.. This will help with nxm next year.

Once upon a time I would have sworn by the Cobra 75, but I've had two of them fail in the past year (no audio output through the built in speaker) and found lots of folks on forums that experienced the same thing. The QC on this radio just isn't what it used to be. I still like Cobra, but I have a little Midland 1001z that 20 years old and still going, so in this case, I think I'd go for the Midland.

WOW, I am WAAAAAAY late to this party and doubt anyone will read or respond but... you never know until you try. Ok, so I am a massive fan of the Midland 75-822. I have not, however, tried the Cobra or the other two similar ones Uniden (Bearcat? I think) and the one by President radios. I am hoping that someone would do a nice YouTube video comparing all of these radios. I like the Midland for the same reasons as others have said: portability; compactness; switchability (?is that a word?) between handheld and mounted.

I am posing a question regarding antennae, however. I have used one of the President antenna (the short New York, I think it is) and am now (yesterday was day 1) using the Stryker SR-A10. The Stryker came with no instructions but you do need to check swr (I have no meter and have never done it so I am lost). I have the mag mount version on the roof of my 2011 Pro-4X. I think I should have amazing range so I suspect that my lack of contact issue has to do with no one being on the cb airwaves. Anyone want to discuss antennae and different radio/antennae combinations? Who has used a fire stick? Who prefers the Lil Will and Big Will set? Have you used other antennae with these radios? What substantive differences has anyone seen/discovered?

I am hoping that, as a side result of covid-19 and isolation, we all end up using CB and Ham radios again. It would be great to see that as a resurgence. Ah, to relive the days of my youth with my big brother and his friends goofing around on radio systems and people having good conversations again. It was good to be able to just flip it on and have people to talk to all over the planet. Is anyone in here? Is anyone reading/responding? Anyone? Am I all alone? Nooooooo... we must be here! I don't want to become I Am Legend...B3D93D54-E91B-4F37-A20A-4F3E3AC46368.jpeg
