So one of my supervisors just asked me to do a ride along with her top visit a couple of customers, but I've got this uneasy feeling that she wants to get me alone to talk. You know that weird feeling you get right before a woman says "we need to talk"

I can only think of a couple of things she'd want to speak about and they are minor, but she's a very unpredictable lady. She's very nice but a difficult read for sure. It's most likely nothing and I'm just being paranoid but getting it out feels a little better.

well mac, what was the verdict, did she try to grab your babymaker, or did she scold you, or tell you that you were doing a good job, that you'd been noticed, and offer you a chance for advancement?

Haha, I forgot about this. She really did just want someone to go with her since the rain was so bad. It was actually a good time. She'd just been saying a lot of underhanded stuff about me not being busy lately, of no fault of my own, so I was nervous. I do think part of it was that it has been slow at work and they have realized they can include me in more stuff like that.

Hey folks...I'm trying to get in touch with a Nissan Techie to ask some questions. Is there one here that would be straight forward with answers good or bad that wouldn't mind?

I know this is later down the road, but when I end up getting new tires, I can't decide between the BFG KM2 or the Toyo Open Country M/T.

I saw both tires at NXM2, and I like them both, I just want to hear what people have to say about them. I figured I would post up in here about it, before it makes it to the open market.

I think you're decision here is MT vs beefy AT right? The KM2s aren't MTs right?

Now I know the numbers comparisons are subjective, so if you want a strickly off-road tire the Toyo's numbers are better. However if you plan to do more on-raod than off the BFG's are better. IMHO. I've been looking into tires too and I keep comming back to BFG but not the KM2, not too crazy bout the design.

After seeing them on both Bill's rig, and on that Solid Axle X, I was sold on the design. If properly maintained, they wear down nicely. I just want to know which will suit me better. I know it is all about personal opinion, but I want to hear what you guys have to say.

the KM2's are definitely MT's, they're slightly modified Krawlers in fact. I've been running a set on my 2nd gen for 28K and they've got very little wear showing, they're nice and quiet (IMO), and they've **NEVER** let me down, whether on rocks, or in mud, sand, snow, ice, water, you name it, they've been fantastic. I'd definitely say spend the $ and get the KM2's

The KM2's suck on ice and snow, IMHO. To get into our driveway from the road takes a pretty sharp turn. Anything but the widest turn will get the tires loose in the front. Even going down the driveway closest to the house on a slightly snowy portion will get it loose.

I let the wife's tires go 6k miles before rotating them once, now I can't get them to wear nicely at all. If you don't rotate every 3k, expect noise and chopiness. It was my mistake, but she loves the look, I hate the noise and wear.

This is from one day, after plowing, pulling the truck down the drive to get the wife. I used the winch on her truck three times, every one of those times to pull myself out of the same spot. Each time had less snow and I thought to myself, with that little bit, it shouldn't slip this time.

I was wrong.

Uh, I'm pretty sure from that pic most any tire on an X would fail you, it appears you're trying to plow snow that's deeper than your bumper. I think any vehicle would have gotten stuck at some point in there...but, I will say that different people have different luck...I've been in about 8"-10" deep snow at most with em and not had issues, but, that was mostly in how I drive on snow/ice I'd say.

As far as rotating, I try every 3000-5000...

What tire pressure are you running yours at? And are you inflating/deflating with snow and when wheeling? (I run a constant 35psi and don't adjust, ever)

That's not the driveway where I'm parked. The ass end is just at the edge of the driveway and it was freshly plowed. Instead of heading straight, where you see her truck, it's a gently left turn, downhill. But instead of turning, it went straight. And with the plowing, there was also salt. I could walk it, no issue, but the tires wouldn't drive it. That's my yard that you see the truck in. My upper driveway is mostly flat, but has the sharp turn from the street (30 yard back from the truck as the crow flies, 60 yards away driving).

I parked the plow behind her truck, chained up to her rig and attempted to pull her backwards, with the plow ('66 Patrol in 4Lo, 4 wheels chained up) and it wouldn't budge. 2 hours and one broken winch rope later, I finally got her truck out of that spot.

Now, when it snows, we don't park her truck in the lower driveway, but I'll park my X with half bald General Crappers down there. Oh yeah, I'm also 2WD, hers is 4WD. The tires are the difference. Her next tires are going to be the A/T's, same size, BFG's.

Tire pressures are at 34psi, but at altitude. The light is on all the time unless the weather is hot, then the light goes off.

I dunno what to tell ya, maybe you have a bad set? I've done a fair bit of tweaking on my X, beefed the motor nicely, and with plenty of extra power and the WOT restriction removed, I still have no trouble on slick surfaces or even in really fluffy soupy sand...hell, last night I unexpectedly plowed off into a 200' long quicksand patch in a riverbed, an my km2's just plugged right across it...and that stuff was bad enough that when I went back through 20 minutes later there was no trace that I'd been there the first time, and the bottom of my bumper was plowing and still had the crap dripping off of it...

I have heard quite a few people say that they have seen a lot of variance in performance of BFG tires from different places though...

the toyo MT are awesome tires tucker. i had them on my diesel 40x15.5x20 and after 4 years i still had half thread left.. they are a Tough tread too unlike some softies. i found them for around the same price as the KM2's also. i had them in snow, ice, sand, mud along with long travels. they are a a bit noisy but then again i did have 40's ill be getting them once again when i need new tires.

After work last night I had to walk the wife through backing out of my "parking spot" where I usually bury it.

Now, she did learn to drive in Amarillo, where she's from (dhyde, ever see a Mack Properties sign? My wife is Maureen Mack's daughter.) So I give her a little bit of leeway when it comes to driving. She's not used to double footing it, so that's new for her.

But we had 6" of snow here, most of it was melted off with only a couple of inches left in the not-so-sunny spots of an all asphalt driveway in temps around 39 degrees.

But it sat there, half off the driveway, yet again, due to the tires. BFG A/T's are the next buy. I've never had a bad set and I've had half a dozen of them. I've even had the ProComp A/T's (not the extreme) and was happy with them, but they flat spot in cold weather overnight. That created some wear issues eventually.

Dude, you just explained it all. My wife learned how to drive around here too and gets ANY vehicle/tire combination stuck because any quantity of snow or ice = stay home an of the streets in Amarillo. They rarely teach "inclement weather driving" skills, and even if they did, it'd get so little use, that you'd still be screwed.

Mind you, I'm bagging on Amarillo not your wife ;)

As far as losing grip on the front tires, air em all up to 35-37psi, keep it in 2wd, and vdc ON and she shouldn't have that problem, and downshift to slow till 1st then neutral, if it's a lack of grip when turning issue, use e-brake ;) controlled sliding = fun ;) (slowly pull while holding thumb button in of course)

If ya'll are from here, gimme a shout next time ya'll come visit, we'll go wheel...if we know far enough out maybe Mac can join us too!

We'll be down there for Thanksgiving. I've tried to teach her a couple of tricks, but there's several things that she's not interested in. Wheeling is one of them, let alone the little tricks.

The tires are aired up. The truck drives fine in all other conditions, on flat land. But it's the going downhill in a turn scenario that kicks the tire's ass. I'm working on getting her a set of the BFG A/T's through the mag's tire advertisers. I'm planning on a M/T vs. A/T article, same vehicle, same scenarios with the same driver through a course to see what the differences are. Even setting up a mobile tire changer for the event. I'm thinking about the slickest area to do this and I believe that when the Georgetown Lake freezes over (where they have the ice races) that I can do it there. Pretty much unchanging once frozen over. Now I'll have to convince the wife to drive on a frozen lake!

hm, sounds interesting....certainly worth giving it a try...as far as what I'd found, most of my digging came from tirerack, which, I can sum up here:
Survey Results for MT tires
Survey Results for AT tires

on the whole, if ice is your primary concern, the KM2's would have ranked 12th overall if you combined the two sets, the KM2's are number 4, with only the Destination AT, Kumho Road Venture SAT KL61, and Michelin LTX A/T 2 coming in higher...

tireracksurveys.jpg

here ya go, this might be beneficial in your article and/or in what manufacturers you approach for test tires ;)

oh yeah, and unless by "for thanksgiving" you mean a week or more, that probably won't happen as thanksgiving day is probably my only time off around turkey day...yay retail :(

its to bad they don't have sand on there. it would help me.

Km2's failed me today, in quicksand...see pics @ what have you done lately thread....

Walking across it, you saw every step you took ripple in every direction for a good 40' so, I don't fault em, I'm the one that stopped on/in it....

Hey folks, Is AC the only place for us to get 4Lo TC gears or an ARB locker (other than ARB for the locker)?

AC really pissed me off with my last order and I really don't want to use them anymore unless I have no other alternatives.

Folks...I have special project concerns and didn't want the world to go balistic with responces and unneeded comments...

First thing first...I am NOT going to SAS Steena!!! Nothing against those that did or are thinking about it I just wanted to keep the X looking as close to OEM visially as possible. I don't want a rock crawler, just greater ground clearance.

Currently I do NOT have a BL, just a 3" SL w/ 31's. It's time to get larger tires. If I wanted to put 35's on 15x7 or 15x8 rims w/stock bs, I know the steering would have to be upgraded. Saving for Calmini now anyway. I know I'd have to change the R&P to at least 5.14. Possible body trimming. My question is...If I went to a 3" BL instead of a 2", would that cut down or eliminate the need to trim the fenders? I know there are added problem/enhancements with a 3" BL like brake lines, radiator mounts, steering column and tranny shirter. Don't know everything yet but I wanted to at least explore the possibilites of 35's and skip over the 33's and put the $ towards what's needed for the 35's.

Comments suggestions please.

FOR SALE : 15x6 wheels, 6x5.5 lugs, cragar soft 8 style primed grey. Was planning on running 33 10.50 15s on these, just never had the money to put tires on them. I believe they are 4.75 bs, maybe 4.5. PM if you are interested, we can work something out. I'll put them on here and CL for 100+ shipping, but I could do 80+ ship for anyone who wants them.

*there are pictures in my build thread of them.

This is the most exclusive an area I could find other than a PM or Mel's area.

I need to speak to a Techie about the computer in a 2000 Xterra. I need to know what exactly it does/monitor/control and what would be effected if it were to be/could be completely bypassed as in taken out. Basically can the computer be taken out and "things" be made to still operate?

I'm under the impression that the computer is mainly there for engine operation. I.E. fuel intake mixture, exhaust emissions monitoring and mechanical operations. Which is the reason for all the sensors it has.

I don't know for sure but I would assume that if you wanted to switch to a carbureted engine or go to standalone engine management.....

Are you wanting something EMP proof?
