Guys. This amateur radio stuff is pretty cool. And I can see the nerd out factor is way up.

/will not become a radio nerd
Only the Cool kids are allowed to play with the Fancy Radio's. ;-)

If your just seeking NOAA weather info The Chinese Cheap Bo-fung wadios.. Can program for weather service Freq, for your area.

Or fancy Radio, they come with a feature. To turn On Storm ALERT Tones. It goes off, and your not expecting such Noise and Tones.. Your Diaper will be instant Soiled with large Chunks.

Ham Radio's are just another Handy tool in the box.

NOAA could be doing updates.. Check other freq.. see if they are broadcasting.. All else fails. Check local NOAA see if they have info on website..

I checked my area they work. But using the 40' antenna grins

I go to 162.55, which is the only one in the area I can receive, and its nothing. just static. One of my radios (yeah, I have two now, both handhelds) will scan just weather bands. And it's getting nothing. Super strange.

This one works for me.. But, I am in west coast..

if yea tried two radio's with same results. would speculate the system is down.. odd, They are pretty reliable system.
unless local ham can type it in. and see if they too get dead air..

We do have solar Flare level 2 I think was listed.. would cause issues with Radio's & power grids. Bonus, northern lights will be brighter.

The frequencies are recycled over the country. Example, my 2nd one and Moab have the same frequency.

I read about the solar storm this morning. Unfortunately, I don't know any local hams to verify if it's just me.

Ham ? .......License ? .......$$$ ?
So, currently the license is still free although it will go up to $35 at some point. The increase has already been approved but all the FCC systems have to be updated as well.

The test will cost from $15 to $25 taken either online or in-person, both done by ham clubs. This money goes to the club.

All questions and answers are available online on purpose. I got a free phone app to use to prepare for my technician license test and scored 100% on the test.

The Technician license gets you access to UHF/VHF (2M/70CM) FM voice, AM SSB voice on 10M and CW on most bands. CW is NOT required for either Technician or General licenses. I'm not sure about Amateur Extra. The General license gets you 90+% of the spectrum.

As far as cost you can spend as much or as little as you want. There are chinese-made handhelds available from Amazon for ~$30 or you can spend a small fortune for the name brands. I started out with a GMRS license and decided go go ham as well.
