Desperately seeking help. Replaced alternator and battery a week ago. Battery is recieving no charging from the alternator. Have had to charge the battery every 4th-5th time it gets driven. Cleaned the ground from the battery to engine. Checked all relevant fuses (I think). Checked b+ cable to battery (while off the alternator while connected to battery) . Checked connector (again while connected to battery +, center contact lights, outer two do not). Have tested alternator at auto zone twice, both times passed. Removed new alternator, bench tested and failed. Replaced with second new one and still not charging the new battery. Vehicle definitely seems to be running solely off the battery. Can't figure why an in vehicle test passes, but I get no charging voltage on the meter. Trying to help out a friend, but have run out of things to try in order to get her a reliable vehicle. Help!

Does the vehicle do anything else odd? Could be the signaling from the IPDM driving it low.

Did you have voltage at the battery cable with it off the alternator but the battery cables on the battery. You say you use it but don't give the results. Sorry for being pedantic but I need you to verify the results so I know which direction to go from there.

Hi TerryD, I'm even more confused now than I was before. I'm not certain I'm searching the posts correctly. I read your original reply and tried to respond, but I'm not sure if I did it right. Is it acceptable to give an email address on here?

Start you a thread in the electrical section for which ever Generation Xterra you have. I assumed it was a 2005+ year in my answer here. Then we can all join in to try and get your situation fixed!

Hi Ontario, I've been trying to figure out what is causing a 20006/gen2(?)/exterra to not charge from a brand new alternator (2actually) into a brand new battery. TerryD has recommended I go to gen2/electrical, but I can't seem to figure out how to get there to try to post. I can turn a wrench fairly well but I can't seem to turn a computer worth crap. I'm really not sure if any of my posts are going forward (sad face). Any direction you, (or anyone else could give) would be welcome beyond what you might imagine. I posted originally under the heading, New from Norfolk. (I don't know if that helps). Gargantuan thanks, ubbuh

Okay. So. A 2006. I honestly start with replacing the IPDM. It's a circuit and fuse board located under the hood on the left side up by the firewall. The cover is about a 7" square. Remove the cover and you should see a white plastic thing with a shiat ton of fuses and wires. It pops out of that with two clips on the sides so you can access the whole thing. Get a new one from the dealer. They're like $200ish. (or at least was when I got mine) The new one will be black. It was redesigned in like 2010 to a much better module that is less likely to fail. It comes with all the fuses pre-installed and all you do is plug in the harness to it, drop it back in the box under the hood and I think it comes with a new cover since the fuse layout changes.

If you're on a lap top, click the "Forums" at the top of the screen. Then scroll down till you see the 2nd Generation section. Click on the Lighting and Electrical sub-forum title and you'll be there. Then there should be a Post Thread button at the top of the screen.
