I Think I'm Losing My Mind....

I thought I saw a posting someplace here with a bunch of photos of the cargo area of the X showing how the poster had removed the rear seats and made a plywood platform to extend forward. One of the pictures was of a panel folded up against the back of the front seats. Also 2x4s were used for legs under a panel.

I've searched, and searched, looked at almost all the postings for the past week or so, and come up empty. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Might have been TerryD, He was whipping something like that up... Or might have been another member... They will chime in with the build.

It will eventually show up. I'm thinking it might be someone new too because I think someone suggested that all the photos should be put into their build thread.

I don't know.... Like I said, I'm losing my mind. :D

I didn't remove my seats, but that's how my first sleeping platform was supported in the front.

My second platform has a door that's currently propped up against the aback seats. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

At this point I'm not too sure of what I saw or where I saw it, it might have even been a youtube video clip or something on fb. It's not important anymore as I'm kicking around several ideas in my mind as to what I want to do.

Thanks to all for the help looking. :)

I saw it too, but I can't remember where. Seems like it was posted somewhere a little strange. May have been buried in what have you done to your x lately. I also can't find it.

I'm hoping to do my drawers on Friday, and would be happy to make a video once that's done, if you guys are interested.
It wasn't the drawers so much as it was how the rear seat had been removed and a platform built with more storage space underneath because the cushion wasn't there. What I was looking for is how the plywood was cut and fitted to do all that.

As it is know, I'll "wing it" and use up a lot of cardboard making templates, and figure it out.

Not really, but it is an idea. I"ll just take all that has been presented, modify it to meet my needs and then have a plan.

Was this the one?

https://www.thenewx.org/threads/budget-sleeping-platform.280411/

Your plan is the best one... take what you like from what's out there, discard what you don't like, and make your own solution that fits your needs. As you mentioned, cardboard is great for mocking things up.

I have spent some nights camping in the Xterra, sometimes solo and sometimes with my wife. We keep it simple and just use the 8GL Action Packer method to create a flat area and then use backpacking sleeping pads. They're light and take up very little space when not in use. A quite different solution to the same goal of comfortable shelter.

Based on *my* preferences, I wouldn't care for a setup like the one linked above, because:

* I like headroom for sitting up and changing... low ceiling would be too claustrophobic.
* I like easy ingress / egress either via the side door or rear hatch.
* When driving I prefer an unobstructed view out the back window.
* I don't want to cook immediately next to my rig and bedding, because odors and bears and fire safety.
* I wouldn't like having that big of a structure and mattress to store when not being used.

I think it's great that it works for someone else and they like it. It does look comfortable and practical for them.

Whatever works for your needs is best. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Hey no cross links.

Just kidding. We're not jerks here.

I have a vague memory of this post as well and have been searching here and there in my free time. But as mentioned I think it was in a "what have you done for your X lately" or some other non-specific thread with an one off or two posts. Will keep looking though.

Well, the plan (in my head) is to remove the back seats, this will give "more" storage. Step 1 is to find a place in the garage to store them. Then extend the floor portion of the cargo area forward almost to the back of the front seats. Next will be to add 2 hinged "wings" to that extension to fill in the space between the floor deck and the door. The hingeing will allow limited access to things right at the door area. The new floor deck will have a "trap door" in it to allow access to the jack area and storage there.

Once I get some rough drawings made up I'll post them so ya'll can see what I am taking about.

Removing the rear seat backs too, not just the seat bottoms? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

A few years ago a forum member came up with a bunch of clever setups for modifying the rear of his Xterra; you might find this interesting:

To clarify a bit.... when I say "seats" I mean the back and bottom. ;)

Part of what Joshua did is what I want to do, specifically:

Without the cutout for the center console.

As I make it, I'll take some pictures and document the changes I make.
