I like where this is going. I am interested to see how the CV's hold up to 35's as I have heard of people snapping CV's on 33's and heard of people running 35's successfully but have never heard from someone who actually ran 35's.

Thanks Man! Yeah, I have a feeling I will waste a few CVs soon. I think the open front diff is the only thing saving me right now ha. I’ll keep this up to date though

Made some progress on my bumper, finally it doesn’t look like a frog. Next is to paint it.

First step to getting 35” tires to fit without a body lift: cut and cut even more.

I outsourced my rear quarter work to a good friend of mine.

Now, I just need to start planning my D60 front axle swap, which will include moving the axle forward just a bit.

You seem to be taking the whole low CG thing seriously, I don't know if I have ever seen that much chop up front on an X that isn't SAS's.

;)

haha. Well, I hate body lifts and love big tires. Also, I’m prepping it for the SAS which is coming sooner than expected.

Speaking of the rear axle. You mentioned a 14 bolt. Unless it's for changing the lug pattern, I wouldn't. The H233b is a beast of an axle. I'd see no reason to swap it unless you're going taller than 5.13s or want to change the lug pattern.

Well @Prime , I am at a turning point with this truck. Either big and wide D60/14B or grab a diamond axle and use my spare third member with ARB. I know the H233B is a very stout axle and will handle whatever I want to do with this truck but I am limited with front axles. I will blow up a D44 with my intended use. The plan is 37'' and double cases.

I didn't think about track width. If you need to go wider, then the 233 is a bad choice because of the limitations. Ford 9? I get it that the corporate 14-bolt has lots of options. But it's not as strioas a 3rd member.

The 9” seems to be pretty good, but the 14 bolt will take everting you can toss at it without having to upgrade anything. Maybe I’ve been hanging out with truggy and SAS guys on 40”s too long But I really want to make this unstoppable in the rocks. I’m sure the first variant won’t be as wild, but we will see

After many failed attempts at getting a Calmini SAS kit I decided to just reach out to Jared of Bonney Motorsports, A wonderful guy who just happens to live near by. I've been quietly gathering solid axle parts during this lock down and should be cutting IFS off and selling the good bits soon.

-Waggy D44 with 44044 2'' lift springs, Locker, 4.88 gears to match my 4.9 rear, upgraded steering and some other bits.

No more of that silly ifs stuff! Make sure you have a sawzall, I just used a grinder when I did my swap recently and it was an absolute pain. Good luck!

Agreed! I am glad to see yours is back on all fours, it looks soo good! Thanks for the tip. I think we are gonna take a plasma to it ha, if not a sawzall will be hot and ready.

Edit: SAS is a go!

Having a little diesel, 4wd tractor was helpful.

Waggy D44 axle that looks like it came from the titanic. Locker installed as well as 4.88 gears to match my 4.9 rear axle.

Welp,

I lost interest for a bit, almost sold it, and broke an auto-locker while wheeling. Now, after rotting away behind my shop since January, she has been pulled back into the sunlight and the sawzall batteries are all charged up and ready. I hung out with Jared from Bonney motorsports and ended up with one of his bad ass leaf hanger kits.

I highly recommend Jared and his product. He is a solid dude and super knowledgeable.

Carnage pics to follow after the fourth.

I've said it before. I should have kept my 1st Gen and SASd it.

I hear you. Your first gen was pretty dang cool, and I even still refer back to the build thread from time to time. I've sold off way too many things due to burnout but end up missing them later. I know your pain.

Not much as progressed with this truck over the last year, still in pieces, still struggling to get the D44 to work. I may just grab a full width D44 and link it soon.. we will see.

Did anyone have issues with the Waggy D44 not having enough room on the short side to mount the U-bolts?

I have never heard of anyone having a issue with a waggy 44, and I wish I could say for sure but mine is a full width 44. Are the springs equal-distant from the inner c's? If anything the picture makes it look like the axle is to far to the driver side if it is a waggy 44 because my full width 44 (66in WMS to WMS) doesn't even stick out that far(Could just be the perspective photo). Have you measured your WMS to WMS? It could be a wide track waggy axle? These are all things that I am betting you have went through but couldn't hurt to ask. Maybe take a few more photos, and add some measurements and upload them? Worse comes to worse you could just move your spring hangers to match the required distance between the springs in order to center it rather than building/buying all new parts for the sas. Hope this helps!

Hey Jwelch,

I appreciate all of your insight. This is a narrow track, so 61" wms-wms. If I align the driver's spring mount on the axle with the hanger on the front crossmember the axle sticks out further on the passenger side by 2'', with no room to move the spring. It is weird because most don't have this issue. thankfully I have found a full width Dana 44 HP for cheap, so I will end up just going that route. I wanted wider anyways. Plus, after seeing how yours sits I know I will be unhappy with the 61" width.

No Problem! HP is definitely the way to go, I have struggled to maintain good driveshaft angles since my SAS due to my lp j10 44. I would still recommend doing the nissan nut Xj driveshaft with the old SAE flange and a custom adapter so you don't have to worry about large angles at max flex(Or a custom double cardan driveshaft depending on your budget). Also I would recommend doing a few inches stretch(If it isn't too late now) if you don't want to cut into the cab too much, at stock length my 35's at full lock would catch under the cab a few inches. You should be able to get away with a few inches without moving the steering box but will make your tires not be sliced all day long(Im Running around 4" of stretch now). Although It looks like you are already part of the Cut to fit life:). Just some things I have learned. Hope this helps, always good to see another person convert an X to how they should have been from the factory!

Hey man, I recently bought David Boyd’s Calmini SAS’d Xterra with the Waggy D44 front. If you ever need me to measure anything or take photos, let me know. I’ll be glad to help, although this is my first SAS’d truck so I’m learning a bit as I go.

I ended up selling my Waggy D44 and am much happier with the fitment of the HP ford axle. Good call, I ended up picking up an driveshaft to T-case adapter after seeing you mention this. Haha, yeah I have cut a lot from this truck in efforts to keep the COG low. The other reason I switched to the HP was the waggy axle required use of the cast leaf mount, which wasn't allowing me to stretch the wheelbase where I wanted it. Good call.

Right? I am stoked to see continued progress on yours!
