Blower Fan Repair

So the fan in my X is going out, stopped working and I checked all the fuses, which were good. I unplugged the power to the fan and plugged it back in, then the fan started, but sounds a bit noisy, dry bearing noises. Has anyone tried to rebuild a fan? I mean, it's a simple electric motor, so the only issue would be pulling the case apart.

Which year of Xterra? The replacement motor for my 2006 wasn't that expensive, and is really quick to swap out, Im not sure I would even bother attempting to replace it.

It pulls out from the bottom of the airbox under the glove box. I need to replace mine. I've affectionately named it "my squirrels."

Larger material can get trapped near the blower fan and make noise. Remove and replace after cleaning could be all that is required.

I should replace the resister as the first fan setting is too high and noisy.

Rock auto has them.. ( SEE LINKY) I think $56 something for it.. 5mm socket, tiny arms & rubber body to get to the dang thing..
If your replacing the Blower.. Replace the Resistor card too.. it will be failing soon as they tend to have issues.. step 1 works, 2-3 fails 4 works. Or other way around.
That card is Here hold my beer. 5.5mm socket. unplug, toss.. plug new one in.. Re-install Reclaim beer.. Done.

I have to clean mine out every 6 months due to Mice dropping cherry pits into the squirrel cage. When I crank to 4 an it's noisy its time to clean it out. and Cabin filters.

a quick check on a 2007 Xterra

Mine is definitely bearing noise. And I put a new resistor in when I did the 2.5 dash swap. So it's brand new.

My original blower motor lasted 10 years and 90k miles. When it failed I put in a $45 TYC part. That lasted only 2 years, and was always louder and weaker than the original. When that one failed I went back to OEM for $140. 3X the cost, but worth it IMO as it restored the original performance.

I have read that some people rebuilt the motor, but I wasn't clever enough to figure out how to take it apart without destroying it in the process.

It's the original blower in my 2011, so it's got about 9 years on it. I've though about replacing the blower, but I dislike tossing money at something, if can be rebuilt/repaired. I've replaced the resistor a couple years ago, but I am figuring it's the fast, as I unplugged power to it, plugged it back in and it slowly started to turn, with accompaniment of bearing noise. So, it's dry bearings, should be a simple fix as long as I can get the fan body apart.

I have a 2011 and replaced the blower motor about a year ago with a VDO from Rock Auto (part #PM9282). It's worked fine since. Also replaced the cabin air filters with ATP (part #RA39). $64 for the blower motor and $9 for the filters.

Blower fan resister. Which specific model should I get? Does buying OEM here matter or are there perfectly acceptable after-market resisters? Explicit suggestions please.

I recommend removing your resistor card and taking a good look at it before buying a new one. There were two different types of cards used in 2005+ Xterras. I ordered the wrong type for my 2011 (Standard Motor Products Part #RU365). Since I was just going to replace it as a preventative measure I returned the card and didn't bother ordering the correct card. As to whether aftermarket cards are as reliable as OEM, I don't know about the cards but I have no complaints about my aftermarket blower motor (VDO Part #PM9282).

The last few time's I've went to start the X as soon as I turn the key and the xcessories turn on it sound's like the fan has something in it for about 7-10 second's [very loud and fast, like playing a music note in 16th's] then it stop's and that's with the fan switch turned off ??. If I turn the fan on it takes about 2 second's and it stop's !! I'm dumb-founded about this especially when everything fan motor related is working the way it's supposed too :( Any idea's , Thanx.............
