Hi everyone,

Quick question: When I bought my Xterra, the tires were new and put on by TFT. They were tire size 265/70R 16
When I look up tire sizes for an Xterra it says: 265/75R 16
Does it matter as far as difference between 70R and 75R?

The X and S 2nd Gen came with the 265/70/16 tires. The Pro4X and OffRoad came with the 265/75/16 tires.

Most of us run either the 265/75/16 or the 285/75/16. Either will fit at stock height. The 285 does take a little work to the inner wheel well on the front. Look into the "melt mod"

Technically yes it does matter they are different size tires.
265 is tire width in millimeters
70 is sidewall height in mm
16 is wheel diameter
The sidewall height will affect you speedometer a little also the price.

For the 2nd Gen, ALL the speedometers are calibrated for the 265/75/16 tire and there has yet to be a way to correct that except a device that goes in the signal line to the dash.

FWIW the 265/70 is 1" shorter than the 265/75.

The 265/75 is a 32" tire if I remember right and the 285/75 is a 33" tire.

The 70 is sidewall in % of tread width. The sidewall is 70% of the 265 tread width.

^^^^^^
Correct.

As a side note, the tires on my Xterra S 4x4 were upgraded to the 265-75-16 which is factory on the Pro4X.
My speedometer was tested to be accurate by checking with a GPS.

I put on some new 2.0 Exdended Travel Radflo coilovers on the front, and some real 5100 Bilstein shocks on the back - and new OME leaf springs... and then had Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's installed. These are 285/ 75 R 16 that only required about 10 minutes of melt mod. Looks great.

Gas mileage took a hit though- those tires are about 100 lbs each.

im glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. when I upgraded from 265/70s to 265/75 I noticed the Speedometor was more accurate. I think somewhere I read that factory variances of 5% are acceptable.

Need Bigger Tires
From memory, the speedo is allowed to read from accurate to 10% faster according to law, but cannot read slower. Most car companies calibrate it for the largest tires available as an option for that particular vehicle.
