Xterra in Hope BC

Hello!
New Xterra owner here, just picked up a mint Atomic Orange 2003 SE, SC 5spd 4x4.
Loving the rig so far, it’s nice to drive, has a great turnaround radius, lots of storage space. And from what I’ve read it is a great platform to modify and play with!
My background is 90’s Toyota’s & LandRover Disco’s, mostly as
mid-range 4x4’s. lightly modified for FSR’s and deactivated roads & access for backcountry pursuits.

Took a drive in to Chehalis Lake this afternoon.
The big scar of an old landslide is visible at the far end of the lake.

Funny. I have been up and down the Chehalis River and have hiked into the canyon in a couple of places but have never been to Chehalis lake. Close but not quite. That said, that old landslide is visible on Google Earth and similar.

Was the landslide catalyzed by poor logging practices? Curious. By "poor logging practices", I mean the way skidder and truck roads along with bridges were constructed back in the day.

Love the colour of the X!

That happened, I want to say, about 8 years or so ago?? Possibly longer.
I don’t believe old logging/skidder roads had anything to do with it, it’s just a chossy mountain side and a fairly active area for rockfall and slides
I have actually paddled the Chehalis and Statlu rivers when I was big into creek boating (ww kayaking), pretty wild areas.

Thanks, I am pretty happy with the orange. Certainly unique!

Good to know BCXterra. I had no idea not having visited the place. Please excuse my confirmatory bias towards the logging industry. For the record, the improvements in logging practices have been revolutionary compared to what went on half a century ago. These logging companies spend a tonne of money avoiding environmental damage.

Nasty natural slides do occur. Up in the Skeena drainage, the heavy rains will soak rocks and the whole mountain side gives way. Has been known to move natural gas pipelines a 1/2 kilometer!!! (Thankfully methane dissipates quickly.) Anglers are quick to blame the logging companies but I get the impression that the vast majority of contemporary slides come about from natural causes.

Never boated the Chehalis. I have run lots of class II and class II whitewater in an open canoe. There is one stretch of the Chehalis, I might try in an open canoe, otherwise it is all kayaking or inflatable raft water. There would be nothing easy about coming down the Chehalis in a kayak, even in low water. Crazy.

Wear a helmet? Must have been over the top, trippy exciting.
