Timing belt inspection cover

So it looks like I need a timing belt replacement in my son's Xterra. His died on him as he was turning into school today. Code 0340. And I pulled the dist cap off and the rotor does not turn when you try to crank it.

I was wondering if the Xterra had a timing belt inspection cover like some cars.

2003 Xterra XE 4x4 VG33E motor.

Not really. By the time you're deep enough to check, you might as well change it. If the rotor isn't turning, then your belt is done. Since this is an interference engine, you'll need to check for bent valves too.

I have read that the faster you're going when it breaks, the greater the chance of engine damage. He was going slow, turning into a parking lot. What are the odds the valves, etc. are OK?

Last update:

Motor is shot. Damn. They said #5 piston was shot and may have even broke through the cylinder wall.

In an unrelated note, I have a nice Xterra for sale (minus motor).
