Bilstein 5100 users

Our 2010 with 90,000 miles was "bottoming out" with heavy load in it. We switched our rear shocks to munroe, but still having the same issue. We are now thinking of buying the Bilstein 5100. Question is, does the 5100 lift the rear up 1 inch? Does that effect the front handling with the OEM shocks still on the front?

Alternatively, if you have a different suggestion for shock absorption for our large load, (100 lbs boat on roof, two adults, one kid, camping gear in back) our back end needs help from bottoming out. Xterra doesn't bottom out without the load in it.

Thanks in advance.

Shocks don't do anything for lift, they dampen the bounciness of the springs. They can, however, limit flex.

You need to look at either new spring packs for lift, or an add a leaf.

Check out Alan Spring out of Grand Junction, CO. I put a set on that are 700# over stock and 1.5" lift after experiencing the same thing. Most definitely the best upgrade I've done to date. They drive great even when I'm not loaded for a trip.

Also check out the Timbren Active Off-road bump stops.

If you're springs are in good shape (not cracked or bent) I had good luck with the Helwig EZ550 helpers and a set of Bilstein 4600s to control them.

I went with Alcans when I lifted though, +500lb +3" and they are awesome.

Another good option in the helper spring category is the Hellwig LP-15, it's a higher capacity spring vs the Hellwig 550 so you won't need to tighten it down nearly as much. I ran a set for about a year before I upgraded the entire leaf pack.

I have 5100's all the way around, installed about 15k miles ago. Fronts are set to 1" to level out the vehicle. With 104k on my original leaf packs, I've debated on going with a pair of GENERAL's. It's been awhile since I've looked at pricing, looking to stay at OEM height.

Is this the spring you used? Every website I visit says they won't work with my X (2011 Pro4x) but i can't understand why. If this is the spring you used, did it level you out and what did it do to your ride?

Thanks in advance for your reply...

Yep that's the model but I think the kit you're looking at includes 4 of them if I'm not mistaken instead of 2. I think I'm the only person with an X running them but yes they fit just fine, they're the same width as our leaf packs. I'll attach a pic of them from back when I first got them but I have them installed on the rear of the leaf packs now.

They're higher capacity than the 550's with these you get 750 lbs extra vs 500 lbs on the other. On my old leaf pack it stiffened it up some and gave about 1.5" of lift I think cranked all the way down. On my current pack I don't have them tightened that much because I don't need lift out them really but the ride quality is great especially when loaded.
