When to change shocks and struts on 03 Xterra

When is it time to change the shocks and struts on a 2003 Xterra? It has 170,000 miles on it. The ride is not all that bad but seems it could be better. This is my first Xterra and I believe they are the original shocks/struts.

Thanks for any help and advice.

They're definitely overdue! Haha. It's typically an 80-100k job. My suggestion for a 1st gen is the Bilstein 5100s. You can tell them apart from the regular Bilsteins because they're silver instead of yellow. They offer a great ride for a very reasonable price. Either Nisstec or 4x4parts.com will be your best bet.

One decision is whether you plan to do a suspension lift or not. If you are planning to do a PML 1.5" lift or full 3" lift, you should get the longer shocks. It's not on their option menu, but you can also select to have a 20% stiffer version if you are running aftermarket offroad bumper or plan to be carrying a lot of weight. Just email 4x4parts and ask for the option.

So I guess I should have been a little more clear in my recommendation question in stating my Xterra is still factory ride height. Went with the recommended 5125s and after paying to install, realized that I am now out a total of $250 (shocks plus install). So, if anyone is looking for a new set of Bilstein 5125s, installed and have less than 3 miles on them, let me know we can work out a deal!

You should be able to get hose in any length including stock. I'd contact the place where you bought them and see if you can do an exchange.
