Timing belt delay

Hi my 2002 xterra died a few months ago and I thought it was one of the recall issues so I brought it to the dealership

So they put a new distributor cap and charged me many hundreds for "working on the abs" cause the light was on (of course that light came back on a week later) .

Anyway they were really pushing at the dealership about me replacing the timing belt which I guess is a rebuild of that whole system .

So I didn't do it, I'm not going to do it with them and pay an extra 300 cause its the dealership. But my question is what am I risking by delaying this repair? The truck runs nice , its at just 70k on it and I have payments left on it so I do want to treat it nicely. But ive got a baby which seems to take all my time and money. ...

Thanks in advance for your advice

Timing belts should be replaced every 100k-ish miles, preferably before that time. If your timing belt goes, so does the greater part of your engine.

Thats the kind of simple input I can handle. What are the indicators that a timing belt is on its way out?

There really aren't any. It's hidden under a cover, and if you dig in far enough to check it, you might as well replace it. You'll know it's bad when your truck just stops and won't restart.

Thanks, what is a fair price for me to pay to have it replaced,
? also what other associated parts should be replaced at the same time?

$300 isn't bad, my shop does it for 250. Water pump is done at the same time, front seals are easy if they're leaking.

It really depends on where you live, I can get some work done cheaper than say someone across the country or another city. Water pump, thermostat, and front seals so it reduces the chances of them leaking later.

So thats 300 in labor ? what is fair for the parts? Should I request particular brand parts?

you are going to have about a grand in total to have it done, belts, hoses, fluids, water pump, cam seals, tensioner, with the new timing beltand about a day of labor. We have interferance engines, so the valves occupy the same space as the top of the pistons.

The timing belt is supposed to be changed 100k or 7 years whatever is first.

I paid 768 , in brooklyn so I think thats about as good as I could get. The mechanic said it was right on time and a lot of the parts were loose.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I might have delayed this and really messed up my beloved family xterra if not for your advice
