Custom Rear Bumper Ideas

Wondering if anyone has done (or if its possible to do) something like this...can't find any pictures so your your imagination lol

Instead of buying metal rear corners and a center rear bumper separate, just have one bumper that wraps all the way around. I've seen this on XJs and such, but never one on an Xterra, I think it would look pretty cool and unique.

Another idea, cut off the sheet metal "corner things" underneath the plastic bumper corners (picture below) so they sit flush with the frame. This way the metal wrap around bumper won't hang down as low and there will be a better departure angle.

Ideas? Thoughts? Improvements? Anything helps! :D

It's been done with tube. I like the look as well. Someone here recently made one if memory serves. Just can't remember who. There is a thread somewhere.

Wouldn't want tube, not my favorite look for rear bumpers personally.

THIS. That's almost exactly what I was picturing!

And he trimmed the sheet metal corners underneath lol thanks for the pictures!

Any more of similar (or different) styles are appreciated! Trying to get some ideas.

Another Question

For all of you, it is the entire bumper sitting on the frame rails? Or is there another support point on the corners? Seems like the plastic corners simply screw into sheet metal.

For the 1st Gen bumper the corners are built into the bumper and so the bumper is bolted onto the frame and that's it. Really simple.
The 2nd Gen corners that I made a while back for my X were a pain to mount cause they had to mount to fender, the bumper and under the X.

Thanks for the info. And the wrap around corners on 1st gens are still solid like that? Like they won't move if i come down on a rock? Lol

Either one of them haven't tested a hard rock hit yet, but since they are built into the bumper and it's all made of 3/16 in plate steel so I have a feeling that rock would just have some paint marks.

I came down off a tall ledge once kind of fast and slammed on the bumper a couple years ago at Moab. It was enough to shear off 1 bolt on the driver side, 2 bolts on the passenger side where it mounted to the frame, kicked the bumper up a bit to where it slightly bent the corner of the hatch, and busted the passenger tail light. I hit it REALLY hard. Once I put new bolts in, tightened the hell out of them, and then replaced the tail light, I haven't had any problems. The bumper itself did not bend or warp at all (3/16 plate with 3/8 mounts).

I actually want to cut mine up a bit to where it sits closer to the body and is more flush; I tend to snag it coming off ledges and scrape going up waterfalls every once in a while. But since that time at Moab, I haven't had any real issues, and I have banged it off quite a few things. The wrap around pieces are plenty strong if you build them right and have some extra support built in (mine has 2x2, 1/4" wall square tubing that runs along the back of the bumper and ties into the wrap arounds).

Thanks for the info! I guess if you hit anything hard enough it'll come loose. I'll definitely be using 3/16 plate and 3/8 mounts; and good idea with the 2x2 tubing, I'll take note of that for sure.

If you don't mind me asking, are you running frame stiffeners? Like the ones that come with the Shrock rear bumpers.

Diablo3662 has a rear bumper he is selling as far as I know it has not even mounted on his X.
