I am thinking about getting myself a bottle of welding gas for my Lincoln 140 Mig welder. I have been welding with Flux core wire for a little bit and would like to try my hand at adding gas into the mix.

I already have the regulator, and gas tube to go from the bottle to the welder and I also already have a spool of filler wire that is non flux core that came with the welder when I bought it. my big question now is what type of gas should I be using ( Keeping in mind that I am just an Amatur at making metal hot and sticking it together). Ive heard of people using Argon, CO2 and Mig gas ( what ever the composition of that is). What should I be using

any imput would be greatly appreciated

One of the most common shielding gases for MIG welding low-carbon steel is called C25, which is 25% CO2 and 75% Argon. In all honesty, the best thing to do is go to your local welding supply store. They will know what's best and get you setup with what you need.

This. Your projects will thank you for the lack of slag.

I voted to stick with flux core...I like spatter :)

I've never had my own gas set up, so I'm not even sure what was being used when I used other MIG welders that had a bottle. I like welding, but I don't really do it enough to bother investing the time or money into the gas set up. The few weld projects I have come up, I just spend extra time with my angle grinder cleaning everything up.

MIG welds are much cleaner with the shielding gas...no debate there. It really just depends how much you weld and how badly you want to use gas. I've gotten pretty good with flux core, so I figure I may as well stick with it. Not enough benefit to upgrading for me. May be different for you.

At the same settings, flux core will penetrate deeper than gas shielded, but will have more spatter. For field repairs I prefer flux core because you dont have to think about the wind, or as much about contamination from dirt, rust, paint, act.

But for shop welding nothing beats gas, that is as long as you have the power to turn it up.

Ok thanks for the advice guys. Went to some of the welding supply stores around here and none of them wanted to just sell a bottle with the occasional fill they all wanted a year long contract with by monthly deliveries. Looks like I am going to stick to flux core

I'm in UT and 20+ yrs ago, all you could get was 20yr leases in cylinders.
Then if you were just a home shop, all you could get was the mid-sized cylinders.
In the last few years, most all are allowing you to buy lg cylinders outright and just the refill charge and no lease. Much better way to go!
