does anyone's insurance company cover off road damage

so i was talking to geico (current policy provider) and they said if i get off road damage it wouldn't be covered. sure, i could lie, but if i roll it that'll be a little harder to lie about because they can determine an estimated speed of travel and who rolls over going 1 mph on the highway..

so does anyone's insurance cover it? and if so, who do you use? thanks

State Farm covered me. I asked my agent ahead of time about my mods and wheeling. Mods are covered on my policy. I was covered on an established road in Sand Flats Recreational area in Moab. Do not assume anything nor depend on forum responses on the interwebs!
Simply ask your insurance company. I have heard people covered, some had to purchase add'l coverage, others no coverage.

USAA, if I understood my contract correctly last time, will if you chose the right premium and coverage.

Simply ask your insurance company. I have heard people covered, some had to purchase add'l coverage, others no coverage.

But this is the ultimate answer.

yeah it seems too situational according to state and where you go. some people say the mods are covered and their vehicle is covered as long as it's not a race or timed event, some say it's not covered at all, some say only vehicle and stock parts are covered off road. all i know is geico said no. lol

I have never heard of GEICO covering. State Farm, Farmers and Progressive (possibly). You pay more on your premiums but it pays off on a claim. Every policy/ carrier is different so the PSA is for everyone to check with their insurance co.
State Farm was awesome to work with on my claim.

yeah geico is good and i like that they're cheaper but i know also get what you pay for. i just couldn't justify going from $126 with geico to $230 with state farm. that's just a lot for one person. sucks to be broke haha. guess i will see if my dad will get usaa from his brother retiring and see if i can get it off my dad idk. we shall see.

Good luck. I know how it is to be strapped and not want to spend more on insurance.
FWIW - $16k in damage and I'm glad I have the coverage I do. Like granite said, don't flop your truck!
And don't follow my lines. [emoji6]

It seems to depend upon some very specific requirements. For example, some off road areas are public, and some are private. Some "trails" are listed as "roads", and some areas are recreationally listed and some are not, and so forth.

Each policy has its own interpretations of all of that. IE: There is typically no one answer to if you're "Covered when damaged off roading". Even an adjuster's interpretation comes into play, etc.

If you read your policy, it typically spells out the exclusions, but, also typically, not all in the same place.

The answer is in your policy. Do not rely on your agent to tell you what is in it. Read it. Every policy is different, Slasa was fortunate to have been wheeling in an area which was considered a public road, and his policy did not, apparently, have an off-roading exclusion in it, or it was not triggered because of the public road status of sand flats.
In general, in my experience, State Farm is the best in terms of how it treats coverage issues for its own insureds. HOWEVER, no insurance company is going to read in coverage where there is none. pull out your policy. read the coverages, and the exclusions, and the supplements. Your answer is in there.
Slasa - was yours covered under collision or comprehensive?

I used to work for liberty mutual and I was always told if it's not excluded then it's covered. The way I understood it the policy had to say something wasn't covered. Just my 2 cents...

This.

I called Progressive and asked them how much extra to cover me off road since the already cover ATVs and SXSs. They told me I was covered. I got it in writing. I called them on it (by running my rear quarter panel into a tree -- not on purpose). They covered it. I didn't lie. I told them exactly what happened. In fact, I kept having to talk the adjuster down because he wanted to fix everything on the truck. Now, the coverage I had was top of the line already and my rates have been higher for the last 2 years but they did cover it. But don't take my word for it. Call your company and check it out.

yeah my company confirmed its not covered. i pay $127 a month and with State Farm it would be $230 or so a month. so that leads in "you get what you pay for" scenario. it's one of those annoying things that make you wonder if $100 a month extra is worth it. yeah, the time something crappy happens i guess it becomes worth it but i wouldn't bother with a claim on minor body damage. mainly if i make my vehicle to where doors won't open or if it's rolled. I have a dent in my right rear quarter panel above my gas lid and i will just leave it be. body damage is inevitable

This thread got me curious to check as well. I am covered for off road damage thru usaa. The also cover aftermarket parts up to 5k. I can't say enough about usaa. When a drunk hit and totaled my frontier I went from a totaled truck to my current x in exactly one week. No problems at all.
