What are you doing about the disconnect? That was the biggest reason I didnt stick a dodge d60 in my truck. Also on your 8 lug conversion ive been told d44s will swap from the Cs out on any axle so you could get a set of outters from a 70s 3/4t truck with d44.

I'm torn between two ideas. One is to keep the disconnect and make it a manual pull cord or to get a custom axle shaft made to the full length. And I am probably gonna be doing the aftermarket outters to have to the high steer

The pull chord would be better for street manners but a solid axle shaft would obviously be stronger. Either way they have bolt on kits for those axles. The 1piece shaft is pretty highpriced but the cable kit is reasonable.

Yea the pull cord way is cheaper. And I plan on running manual hubs so all that will give me better street manners and control.

If you are running manuals anyway Id opt for the solid axle. They are alot stronger and you dont have to worry abut the highway manners if you can unlock them.

So here's a question for those that have done sas before. How well does the brakes off the dodge or what ever ya pulled off axle of work with the x's master cylinder ? Should that something I should look at replacing that since I'm using different brakes front and rear?

The brake calipers are what determins that. I have double piston fronts so the first gen x mc wasnt enough but if your rocking single piston id try them first. The biggest pita is the distribution block bc of the abs unit. I bypassed mine and run the lines direct through 2 residual valves.

Good point. I'll have to see what brake calipers i wanna run front and rear and then once it's all done see how it all works. I could always just throw a titan master cylinder in it to help out thought.

If you're swapping both axles, you'll need to swap out the m/c. Chevy 1/2 ton unit works great. Those that say the stock unit works good enough has never driven a SAS'd X with a Chevy unit in it.

Midget, did you take out the residual valve for the rear axle before you installed residual valves of your own?

True also the 79 f250 unit Im using is a direct bolt on as well. Lines use different threads though.

Edit I bypassed the entired abs unit and ran 2 individual residual valves but Im still having issues with my rear brakes Im pretty sure its an internal thing so I have said screw it and Im going to disc the back over the winter.

The residual valve for the rear brakes isn't in the ABS module. It's on the passenger's side frame, just behind the front tire. I'd take out the one that you put in for the rear and see how it works then. I think you'll be surprised. ;)

And a mid-70's Chevy unit works great.

Cool thanks for that info. I'll start looking at my options and maybe find a good one for cheep.

I just want to all the parts gather up so I can start working on this.

I tried that originally it was doing the same thing. I had no pedal and had to pump the brakes up to get the rears to work . Enough highjacking though Im ditching my drums as soon I get the distributor & leaf spring changed.

What's your plan for the ABS lines?

Sent from my iPhone4 using Tapatalk

I gonna try use the stock sensors and I think it was dodge tone rings since they have the same or very close count to the x.

Did that end up working for you. I'm thinking I'm going to attempt to use the sensors off the rear and splice the fronts into it in hopes it'll fool the system. I just wanna make sure I have a bomb proof way to "fix" the ABS system before I SAS.

Yea sas isnt the same as doing a tswap. There is alot more options its can be overwhelming at 1st but its it will be worth it in the end.
And this swap may happen alittle sooner that expected since I think my front wheel bearing may be going. And there is no reason to to replace when it will be replaced with a completely different axle

So I finally gotta do some work on this project. I was able to cut off all the old dodge brackets off the front axle and I'm getting ready to clean it up and take some measurements for my 3 link. I'll take some pics in the morning

Sadly no. I had surgery on my shoulder so I'm down for a couple more weeks. Then I can hit the pick pull yards to get a few more parts

Subscribing, I'm having a rotator cuff and labrum tear being repaired in 2 weeks, best of luck and looking forward to seeing this build move along!

Good luck on that it will suck for awhile but it will get better.

And now I have about 75% strength back in my shoulder and so I finished cleaning up the front axle. But I think I'm leaning towards selling the dana 44's and moving up to the dana 60's.

I was trying to go with 8 lug hubs but to get it for the d 44 seems to be a pain and I might as will go big since I have a good tc. The motor and trans will stay. And I the goal of my X is going to be hard core expeditionary rig and will have a custom trailer to go with it.

Thoughts anyone? Am I crazy? Lol

If it's an expo rig, 60's may be overkill, remember, keeping weight down is fairly important....a rock rig that you plan on beating up hard, 60's hell yes, but, for expo, 44's are plenty, in my opinion.

True but when you are fully armored you aren't really saving weight either. My thoughts are having the heavy duty parts. I am having a np205 so that may over kill to some too. Also I have access to old hmmvw beadlocks and the 37 in tires they used too. That's why I'm thinking going to the d 60
