I figure this area needs some action without titties so I figure we could use a thread where you can toss out random info that you're not sharing with the general public quite yet.

Be it special projects you are keeping on the down low or personal stuff you want to share or need advice on.

I got news today that I'm getting a promotion!!!!!!!!! Hell yeah! My boss isn't referring to it as a promotion as much as a transition into another position. It's a promotion lol. I'm getting my own office much more responsibility and we'll be talking money in March when we have our annual reviews. :w00t:

Ok here is some news..

If the Xterra is to die.. So might the frontier..
I was told by a engineer a day or so back that Nissan may kill both off. The mpg battle may take them. The guy told me the frontys mpg and the new Titans will be so close that only one may survive. This pisses me off.. I would rather own a mid size vs a full size. Still all rumors right now.

Thats pretty freaking retarded, seeing how nissan has always had a compact/midsize truck, and the titan is pretty crummy for a fullsize if you compare it to everything else. Seems like it would be easier to make the smaller vehicle have a better mpg, need to tell those engineers to do a better job engineering here and quit making everything bigger. Not everyone needs a fullsize, look how many s10/ranger/hardbody/yota's are on the road still being driven in to the ground.

From what they told me its not just Nissan ford killed the ranger dodge killed the Dakota and this guy said he has seen gm's memos on killing off the s10 thingy.. This fed mpg deal is about to force people to drive what the gov wants.. That would leave Toyota as the only mid size truck.. Now this is just rumor at the plant right now.. I had the engineer tell me this though

I started building my axle today. And by building, I mean it took parts from 3 axles just to make the housing. 2 different Jeep long side D44 tubes and the center section from a high pinion Ford D44. Jigged up and welded together for true. 5.13's to go in it, possibly an ARB as well.

Haha. Yeah. I pulled the pics from the calendar last year when I didn't even have my X yet. It makes me realize how it needs redone with Xs I actually admire, not just winners of totm on newx.

Does any of our sponsors or someone here make replacement roof racks? I'm looking to replace mine in the future but would like it to be all metal. Trying to get either the footing specs or the actual foot plates.

Also, I'm beginning to look into lockers, front to be exact. However to be honest I know next to nothing about what ALL is involved. Is it a simple as installing the locker and air supply into the pumkin(simple as in having someone other than me do it that is)? or is there TC work to be done as well?. Any information that someone can point me to for reading or person that wouldn't mind talking to me about it would be helpful.

Thanks,
Greg

Setting an ARB in a front diff is not really that difficult, but it is very exacting. It is still a replacement carrier that is installed into the original diff housing, and an air line run to actuate it. Setting up the gears with the propper pattersn backlash, and preload is what takes skill. Everything else is pretty straight forward wiring and plumbing.

And ARB is the only locker choice for you.

So am I looking at/for someone that's an overall Off-road mechanic, dealer or ARB specialist? Cause I've never cracked into a pumpkin before and don't really think this is something I need to start with. lol

ARB has dealers all over.. I know 4wheelparts does this

Closest 4wheelparts store to me is: Indianapolis IN.
Living in the upper MidWest...seems companies don't believe any wheelers live here.

They want $1,075.99 for the locker, $264 for the compressor and for kicks $200 for the diff cover(gotta have that yanno).

Nothing against one of our sponsors but AC sells the locker for $996. I know cause it's on my AC wish list. Hint Hint...lol

Found an ARB dealer up in the NW subs area. I actually used them 7 yrs ago when I first moved here and lost who they were. They installed my Shrock front. I had planned to call them today to talk about thier prices but got caught up in other things. Attitude Performance... possible sponsor maybe?

Update: Did some research into Attitude Performance. Seems thier rep has gone waaaaay down and thier prices have gone waaaay up in the past few years. NOT a good word can be found on other sites.

I'm not sure if any sponsors do, but, I make drop in ones somewhat like dephep racks when I have time/money and I know that xoskel.com has some great full replacement racks too...

Thanks for the info. I'm looking to make my own since I have a new toy. It's really just the feet I need to duplicate w/o taking mine off. Guess when it's time I'll have to do just that.

making your own is a great feeling, I couldn't be happier with the way my rack turned out, though, the welds aren't the prettiest, it's WAY stronger than what I could have wanted....

When you get ready, give me a shout. I'll have the mounting pads on file and can burn them out on the CNC plasma cutter for you. It'll be cheap, plus shipping, but I'll have it nailed down after I get mine scanned in and cut out.

I'm at the end of my 4th 16 hrs day and a bit tired...Does this mean you have the footing for a roof rack? If so, HELL YEA I want a set!!!

In the next week or so I'll be scanning in the foot pad foot prints and making the adjustments necessary to mass produce them. Selling them as sets should be OK, but they probably won't include bolts.

Does that sound OK? Any requests as far as making them, like a particular thickness? I was thinking something along 13-12 gauge for strength and load. Should be weldable for any thickness of tubing or structure and maintain the roof load rating easily.

Suggestions welcome!

Although I've never taken my rack off, I'm guessing the bolts would transfer over ok if needed. In my case however, every nut/bolt I loosen is being replaced with Grade8.

Also, I guess asking for a rubber/plastic slipper for dem feetz would be askin too much huh...LOL Guess I should be able to make some of those since you're doin the hard part.

I forgot about this area...

Mr. Mut, How dem feetz comming along?

General question here: When it comes to the hard points under the feet are they designed for body length rails only or will they support cross body main rails as well?

Current OEM roof railing travel the length of the vehicle and are feet are angeled @ 45 deg. accordingly to hold the railing. This leaves the weight of whatever it is you put up there on the Xmembers, which are held on by the weak hard plastic. If the feet were to be designed to hold railing @ 90 deg. and the Railing went accross the body, all the weight would be on the solid railing and the hard spots.

I would think this would allow for easier rack designs, weight distribution and building material selection like 2" DOM. Does anyone see what I mean?

Thoughts, comments?

I still have to take the rack off my X to get the feet made.

As far as the tubing, all I'm making is the bare feet (flat parts with the holes) so you can weld the tubes straight, crooked, upside down or sideways if you want.

Plastidip might do the trick for the padding just fine.
