Hey everyone. Welcome to my build thread. My name is Kristen. I drive a 2000 Nissan Xterra SE in Aztec Red. I bought the truck back in 2009 with 68k miles and one previous owner. She had been babied and only driven as a carpooling vehicle. Since buying her that day, and finding all sorts of forums and clubs across the interwebs I've found a new love in my life; I call her my girlfriend [it's a lesbian love of sorts], my Xterra. We've been through a lot so far - and here's her story.

In the beginning:

I don't remember exactly what my first mod was to the X, but I think it was getting the AUX lights working on the brush guard.

Next came the removal of the step rails & a lovely detail bath.

Before I knew it Jenny [the name I've given her] and I were off on your first offroading adventure in Troy, NC at Uwharrie National Park. Everything was still stock at the time - so we took it easy, but again she surprised me. I had taken my sway bar off just before we left town, and obviously aired down a bit.

Her first time really flexing everything out. =]

Took a couple more wheeling trips, but don't have many pictures due to the fact we spent most of the time fixing my ex-'s Toyota that had broken a couple of joints in the rear axle. [Hince the random tire leaned up against the back of the X.]

The real bites from the mod bug:

I repainted the faded plastics using Flynn's Blacktastic. It's a fairly inexpensive wipe on paint. A sponge, gloves, and a couple of layers later everything looked like new. Its lasted really long too, so I suggest it to anyone who has the time and doesn't want to spray paint.

Next mod was a set of Calmini HD shackles.

Her very sexy rear end has had some work done as well [aka stickers]

More upgrades

New tires - Cooper Discoverer ATP 265/75/16s on a
set of 1.5 gen wheels a fellow Xterra club member gave to me and I painted black with Rustoleum Bed Liner. She's got 152k on the odometer and she runs great.

- Replaced distributor cap and rotor
- R44K fuel system cleaner ran through

Nice build Kristen! I'm jealous of your snow. The only snow we've had since I got my X has been blowing snow that might as well have been sand. Did you bend your brush guard back into place after the wreck or get a new one?

Thank you! I'm pretty upset that we haven't had ANY snow at all this year yet. I'm hoping to at least see some before February. Dad and I tugged on the brush gaurd, but it's still pretty outta place. We just put the rubber piece over the most obvious places of damage and left it. Here's what it looks like now [minus the burnt out headlight]

Great write up, that color does look good with everything blacked out on it. Can't wait to see more.

Thank you. I was originally in love with the Short Bus Yellow Xs, but my parents found this one and we couldn't pass it up.

Oh snaps, I forgot about the secret mod. So what gives Kris, I don't really visit the "other" place anymore but I remember a little something about that.

It's been in the works. The person I was working on it with has since walked out of my life - so I've got someone else helping with ideas. But he too, has been super busy with his own truck.

And thank you everyone.
Xterror - Pink babies are on the way! We've just got to get Brutus and Jenny together. SOON.
J Everett - You're certainly welcome. I think i still have a good half a bottle or more left. LOL You could always bribe people to let you do their cars and trucks for $30 with what you have left over.... it'll pay for itself.

Pretty well with the exception of some chips & flakes here and there as you can see in the close up picture of my brush guard. Try not to use a pressure washer on the plastics afterwards.... like ever. Don't be worried about the swirly appearance at first... it goes away after a week or so, once everything fully soaks in. And if it ever starts to flake like mine has you can just go back and do the section over with one coat. Don't dab.... just touch it up as if you were painting it for the first time. Also make sure the truck is clean and everything before you start painting. Tape off any body that might come in contact with the stuff, and wear gloves. =] If you need any more info, feel free to PM me.

I've heard mixed reviews on blacktastic, most have said just what you did though, it'll chip and flake off....did you scuff the plastic a bit first or no? Also, if you have too much chipping/flaking, are you considering peeling/sanding it all off and redoing it with black bedliner?

Thank you =]

No, I didn't scuff the plastic. It's not a very thick paint so I didn't want the scuffing or anything to show through. You don't have to peel or sand it off at all if it's flaked. Honestly I just went back over the section with another coat and you couldn't tell that it'd flaked at all. Compared to the Back to Black that only lasts a few weeks - this stuff is amazing. It may not be as great as spray paint, but if you don't want to remove all of your bumpers/plastics or tape EVERYTHING off, then this is your best bet.

gotcha, I was under the impression that it was a thicker deal that was really obvious when it started chipping/flaking/etc

Poor Jenny was involved in another wreck a couple of weeks ago, but thankfully the damage was minor and it was the other person's fault - so I won't be paying a dime. Funniest thing was - she was driving an Xterra too. My insurance company just said she was jealous -- yeah, probably =)

Most of the damage is in the body under the bumper and across the wheel. But I just got an estimate from the insurance company the other day to fix the damages. Looks like anywhere from $1200 to $1600 worth in parts, paint, and all that jazz. Thankfully it won't take long. But I did have to set both companies straight on the fact that my wheels are in fact stock Xterra wheels, they're just from a newer X. *rolls eyes* Guess they didn't think a chick would set them straight about that.

Thankfully Allstate found it somewhere in their system. I think that it's an error with whatever program they're using because the guy said it sent him to Pathfinder instead of Xterra. Thank you though!

Update:
The X is going into the shop on the 5th to get everything repaired. I'm going to be so bummed while she's gone, and I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get a good rental car.

I got a few things fixed on her yesterday. First job was to get the aux. lights angled back down on the brush guard. Three washers just below the lights and we were back in session. But then I ran into the next problem. The lights weren't working. Checked the wires under the hood, everything was good. Crawled into the floor board on the drivers side and noticed that one of the wires had snapped in half. Quick fix.

426618_3309114094107_1455745309_3044572_157411146_n.jpg

Then came another clamp for my rattling exhaust just underneath the driver's side. Cheep fixes altogether though.

Now I've just got to figure out where the slow leak is on my driver's side front tire. I stopped to check it the other day and that one was down to 20 PSI. All the others are sitting at 45. Well, as far as I could check. The wreck messed up the stem on the right rear tire/wheel so I couldn't really get a reading off of it, but it doesn't look low or anything at all.

Added some more HP along the way as well.

Looking for another warm day to come my way so I can give her a good bath, wax, and touch up that Blacktastic.

Stay tuned for the mods coming soon!!

Feel free to wax mine, too. Just sayin.

So homegirl messed up the valve stem on the RR? Make sure the shop replaces that stem while they're at it.

Oh they've gotta do the whole wheel, and I'm going to get a kick out of how they plan on painting the wheel to match and to get the bumper corner to match the other pieces as well. lol The wheel has Rustoleum Bed Liner and the other bumpers have Flynn's Blacktastic [not spray paint].

Karla - thanks for the offer to do something with all the time on my hands, but no thanks. My elbow can't handle two cars, much less the one.

X is back out of the shop and looking great. Got word that a rat had been calling the vent in the bumper "home" but hopefully that's fixed now.

Now it's onto saving up more money so I can get this mod bug to stop biting.

Any suggestions for my next (cheap) mod?

agreed, the Duplicolor "Bed Armor" is a nice non-tacky, pretty fine textured bedliner that went on very easily and dried up well....it's what's on my sliders right now.

In the works. I'm going to stick with the Rustoleum for now since I've already used it once. Thanks for the ideas.

Paint your interior, cheap, but very noticeable mod. This summer I'm painting everything. But check my build thread for a picture of what I did

Heck no. No way I'm painting the interior. My girlfriend painted her seats blue and I've seen other's paint the dash, but that's not my style. The inside of the X is staying clean. Heck I'm still paying for the truck.

I think I'm going to dye my seats this summer like your girl dyed hers. Well I know she painted them, but I might dye mine
