Don't they do this every year thought?
A story comes out claiming that it's the last year for the Xterra and then they keep making them.

Well time to buy a 2wd frontier. Drop a LS1 in it. 4 link the rear and long travel the front <= true long travel. And move out to the desert....

Wow, really bummed to hear this. But, I will say that I am happy to see the XTerra go out as the capable vehicle that it is rather than being "refreshed" as another crossover.

If Nissan reads this, my next vehicle will either be a 4 Runner, a Silverado, a F-150, a Jeep Wrangler, or if Ford pulls a rabbit out of their butt a new Bronco.
The only choice left for a compact SUV that is capable is the 4-Runner. Or a Heep. But I really don't want to drive another one of those.

This is a really great point, they never Pathfinder'ed the Xterra. They let it die doing what it did best and looking good while doing so.

That is an excellent point. Better that way than emasculated, plus we have years and years of parts to pull from that are identical.

Not sure what Nissan expected when they haven't had a redesign in 10 years, how can they honestly expect to sell anything that long by just rehashing the front end (goes for the titan too). Thats 2 of my cars Nissan has killed now, and honestly there is nothing in their line up that I want from them (or can afford *cough* old man 370z). I hope Nissan pulls some real excitement out of their ass, making the cars snowboard and do stunts in a commercial is laughable for their bland lineup. New 4 Runner is looking pretty mean these days.

Hoping the word of a diesel frontier is true, and not ruining that by making it 2wd only.

Worse comes to worst, I will consider a Frontier with a camper shell. But a NA market Patrol would be supremely badass. I also really want Nissan to build the IDx, just call it something cooler, like 160SX.

Yep thank our leaders in DC for this..
They have pushed and push the Common American to drive something they didn't want..

I like how the story ready Nissan couldn't afford to make the Xterra current with new CAFE regs.. I call BS on that.
The Frontier is basically the same Truck.. I bet they push to make it work..

2016 is when the next Frontier shows up.. Get ready for the Navara design.

What pisses me off about this is how they treated the SUV. Yeah numbers are down and in all honesty the GEN2 never caught on like the Gen 1..
Sure we have a lot more years with it but for some reason the GEN2 was never a huge hit. But you have to run Ads telling people what a great SUV you are building.
Hell Toyota will put the 4Runner in one from time to time.

Lets look at the SUVs they currently offer

1. Juke - Small/Sentra based $20,250 Sold 2014: 38,184
2. Rogue - Mid/ Sentra based $23,040 Sold 2014: 199,199
3. Murano - Mid/Large $ 29,560 Sold 2014: 47,301
4. Pathfinder - Mid/Large $29,510 Sold 2014: 79,111
5. Armada - Larger/XL $38,060 Sold 2014: 12,593
6. Xterra Mid $23,660 Sold 2014: 16,505

Out of the 4 current CUVs there are really only 2.. The Juke and Rogue are about the same size and the Murano and Pathfinder are as well.

Its about AVG MPGs for the company and profit per SUV and Xterra is basically the cheapest SUV they build so not much profit

That's the thing that really pissed me off. Is that they dump the truck and complain of poor sales when it hasn't been in ANY advertising since the 1st Gen that I can recall. Maybe if they plugged it like they did the 1st Gen, then maybe, it'd be salvageable.

After thinking about it more yesterday, it would have been nice if nissan made a numbered run of the last solar yellow with a special pro 4x package. Maybe 32" 0r 33" tires with a small 2" factory lift. Numbered dash etc. Like toyota did with the ultimate trails team FJ.

The Pro4X already comes with tires 1" bigger in diameter than the other models. I.e. 265/75R16 (31.6) vs 265/70R16 (30.6). Almost a 32" tire. A special edition would be cool. I made my own special edition though.

Edit: changed tire size to 265. Had 285 (33") on the brain.

Remember how excited everyone was when the Gen 1 came out, I was in high school and everyone wanted one so bad. Car guys, offroaders, cheerleaders, outdoorsy types of all kinds, adventurers, soccer moms and dads not wanting a minivan, it was marketed to everyone and marketed well. It didn't have any more features or amenities than any other suv (first aid kit not withstanding), it was basic, underpowered and rode rough, but everyone loved it.

Nissan you did a huge disservice to the second generation and then blame the .gov on it, your the one that couldn't develop a fuel efficient engine, you stuck a 4.0liter with more hp than necessary in the truck, what do you expect for fuel efficency. Its like they have been looking for an excuse to kill it off and just let time do it itself.

That, and no redesign in 10 years (besides the minor facelift). You gotta change it up a little bit to stay fresh and relevant. Not changing or updating hardly anything in 10 years bids yourself out of the market.

I agree that the Gen 2 was just something sorta thrown out there to attempt to revive the model. However, the 4.0L was in response to critics complaining about the grossly underpowered 3.3L in the Gen 1. The supercharger was ridiculous and wasn't, IMO, worth the +40hp and -4mpg results. The 265hp they're rated at is on par with several competitors such as Toyota. Keep in mind, the Frontier received the same engine with the idea that it could also tow a decent amount. Why throw in a different engine on the same platform? Once the news broke on the Frontier redesign coming soon, that should have been a sign that the Xterra had already faded from the grand scheme.

The Gen 1 also faced safety critics. IIRC, there was an ad or article bashing the Xterra for its high rollover probability.

It's a box. On wheels. Find me an SUV of that era that didn't have a 'high rollover probability'. My brother rolled his Tracker.
