When I owned a Jeep I had a lot of fun wheeling it and do sometimes miss it. But I still prefer my X over it. Advantages of the Jeep: tighter turning radius and shorter wheel base to overcome some obstacles I have more probs with in the X. It had (I think) a better gear ratio- 4lo you could crawl so much better than in the X.
Even so, the X is much more comfortable to travel in, more spacious for all my crap and an overall more versatile vehicle. Though I do wish the 2nd Gens had a moon roof or something- I miss taking the doors off on the Jeep. I can sleep in my X, I couldnt (comfortably) in my Jeep.

I'll play this game...

Reasons I bought the Xterra:
1. Power of the 4.0
2. Unique looks
3. Nissan reliability
4. Nissan price
5. Fuel economy [in class (FJ, Wrangler, etc)

Cool stuff on the FJ:
1. Manual shift T case
2. Unique Looks
3. More aftermarket
4. Lower gearing

Xterra.
1. No one around drives them so i like the uniqueness
2. Nissan can't go wrong.
3. decent fuel from other mid size suvs get
4. closed back end and 4drs. unlike the jeep and FJ (need room for fire/gym gear, etc)
5. compatibility with my lifestyle. up for any challenge

Other suvs.
1. jeeps- no doors, or anything else on it. i do love that part.
2. the fj has a unique look and it rode quite nice in the test drive.
3. other larger suvs much more room for tons of junk.
that's basically it for other suvs for me. hense why i chose an X

I shopped the Liberty(2nd gen) and the FJ Cruiser hard before I decided on the Xterra, which was my first choice.

Reasons I chose the X
1. Compared to the FJ, I could see out of the Xterra in all directions.
2. More power/torque and similar or better mileage than both the FJ and Liberty. (as of 2010, the FJ makes power numbers nearly identical to the Xterra)
3. Price was sooo much better than the FJ.
4. Compared to Liberty, Xterra has a ladder frame and tows 5000 pounds. (3500 for Liberty, which is a tad less than the boat I tow)

Things I like about the FJ
1. It rides a little better than the Xterra.
2. It's a little lighter than the Xterra (150 pounds or so)
3. Rear door tire carrier/side hinged door
4. Looks cool, in a giant toy sort of way.

Things I like about the Liberty
1. Sky Slider roof
2. MyGig harddrive based entertainment system

xterra vs 4dr rubicon:

xterra:
Price
Skids
More Comfortable Seats
Bigger Stock Tires
MUCH better motor
quieter

Jeep:
more aftermarket support
stronger front diff
better crawling ratio
front and rear lockers
electronic swaybar disconnects front and rear

in the end the xterra won based on cost and comforts, it's a daily driver, and to be honest, I know nissans have a great history of being mechanically reliable, while jeeps....not so much, when it runs it runs good, but when it breaks, it breaks your bank account too.

I am sort of biased in this discussion so here reasons I bought the Xterra:

1. My Father has worked at the Smyrna plant for 26years
2. VPP discount
3. always wanted a pathfinder when i was younger, so this was the obvious choice at the time
4. wanted something rugged enough to handle that occasional dusting of snow that hits us once in awhile
5. best bud has an FJ, so had to get an X to show him up

Jeep Wrangler:
-Smaller wheelbase
-Power & MPG's of a Inline 4 or 6
-2 Solid Axles

Didn't have a choice of Xterras for the rental today, but the place did have two Heeps available.

(I went for the Dodge)

Bought an X
Xterra:
1. Can sleep in the back
2. Comfortable for looooong trips
3. Can go where I want
4. Plenty of power
5. It's not a Jeep

Ford 7.3 Powerstroke :
1. Can sleep in the back
2. Comfortable for looooong trips
3. Can almost go anywhere where I want, and can carry the atv that WILL take me anywhere
4. Plenty of power (and it's a diesel, love diesels)
5. It's not a Jeep

I was shopping for a vehicle that was better for my lifestyle: something that had room to hall things, 4wd, built for hunting/fishing/outdoors. Of course, I went towards the Jeeps, but as everyone knows, they cost a lot, and you don't get a whole lot. I did find one I liked, and it wasn't a rust bucket like all the others I looked at, but the dealer really pushed me away.

Xterra:
1 Room fishing rods and other goodies
2 Can tow smaller loads (like my boat)
3 Not terrible gas mileage
4 Adequate 4wd sysem
5 Nissan reliability

Other brand: Jeep Wrangler
1 Small
2 Short wheel base/ w little tow capability
3 Solid Front Axle w/ lockers on front and back
4 Not exactly known for reliability
5 Rust badly
