What oil do you use?

A few weeks ago my wife and I picked her up a 2011 pathfinder, so very similar to a gen 2 x... Well she had since driven it to Dallas Texas and back and now It needs a oil change... What are you gen 2 guys using? And what are your change intervals?

I'm pretty sure I will stick with a puralator filter, as I have had good lock with these and they have awesome filtration...

So what oil do you use?

I run Mobil 1 5w30 at 5k mile intervals. With a good filter, even conventional oils can easily run those intervals, and it's easy to keep track of. I actually changed the oil and filter at 3k, 6500, and 10k before I got on my 5k intervals, simply because the break in period for the first oil change is 3k miles. Ideally, I would use Royal Purple or Amsoil, but that stuff is so much more expensive and really only marginally better than the Mobil 1.

I'm seeing a popular vote here lol... I ran amsoil in my gen 1 and actually got worse mileage I now use royal purple... I'm thinking Mobil 1 for the pathy though

How much oil does the 4.0 hold

5 3/8qt with filter change, 5 1/8qt without filter.

I'm currently running Mobil 1 Extended performance and the Mobil 1 extended filter.

Last oil was Mobil 1 high mileage, I grabbed it as it was all I could find at the time, only difference is a additive package for reconditioning older engines, figured one run to clean stuff up wouldn't hurt a thing as I don't know what sludge the used car dealer poured in there.

I'm also changing the oil filter every oil change.

I was doing 5000mi changes, this time I may do 6000, do an oil analysis, and see what I want to do from there. I can't see leaving any oil in there for 10k or 15k like some claim is fine, but I do think 5-8 k might be perfectly reasonable, given I put enough miles on that I can still be doing several changes a year at that.

The recommended 3500mi is just too low, I'd be changing oil pretty frequently at that rate.

Here is my latest oil analysis:

If you have them run a TBN ($10) then they can let you know how much 'protection' is left. Last test I did they said I could go 7500. I'm about 1500 away from that now, so we'll see what happens then.

Another vote for Mobil 1 for oil and filter. For the $$ you can't really do much better. Never ever ever use Penzoil though. Might as well put on a Fram filter w/ it's cardboard end cap.

I'm assuming your talking about old school Pennzoil??? Not to thread jack or anything

* I run Pennzoil platinum synthetic with a k&n oil filter

Yeah. There was a test I read a few years back that compared all the typical oils out there in terms of viscosity, wear protection, longevity, etc. they only tested traditional Penzoil bit it ranked at the absolute bottom of the scale. I believe one of the comments was " you might as well use water instead." Heh

Been using Mobil 1 ever since in everything. (Unless it has a leak....which is made worse by synthetics) So in all my Fords I've used Mobil conventional.

My oil changes are still being done by the stealership they use Valvoline oil and, Nissan filters. So the oil gets changed between 1500 and, 2000 miles cuz its free for the next year

An update to my previous post here, my latest oil report shows the results of moving from a Nissan filter to a Mobil 1 filter, and switching to the extended performance flavor.

I ran it longer, and wear went down. When I did the change for this report I did the same combo, Mobil 1 extended performance, and Mobil 1 extended filter. I plan to do just as they suggest, 8000 miles, and see what happens.

I'm using Amsoil and with the 25K mile deal, it's much cheaper than Mobil one. Last I checked (it's been some time) the Amsoil wasn't even that much more expensive than Mobil1, but to be fair, I did pay to be a preferred customer (which doesn't add much to the bill).

I used amsoil in my 1st gen, I thought it ran like crap... My mileage went down, and it felt like power did also... I use royal purple in it now and it likes that a lot better

Used to run Castrol Syntec. Then the oil always seemed to char almost black at 3000 so I switched to Mobil 1. I liked Mobil1 but when I read oil reviews it seemed it was a lower quality base stock of sythetics. It was good but the occasional cold start would cause the lifters to clammer till the oil thinned. After a lot of online research. I went with Pennzoil Platinum. So far have been very happy. Good performance great price.
Always use the OEM oil filter. I've had issues in the past with aftermarket filters. With the OEM filter I know I can trust the anti drainback valve to not give me dry starts.

Same story with mine..switched from Amsoil to Castrol synblend and my mpg went from 14.5 to 16, and no more occasional oil pressure light

I ran both Royal Purple and Amsoil in my second gen and noticed almost no difference between the two as far as performance. However on that same note, not totally convinced that the higher end synthetics are really significantly better than the less expensive synthetics, don't think I've heard of anyone having issues because they use cheap synthetic oil (as long as they use a decent filter).

I use Amsoil in one of my air cooled bikes. That decision was based on studying oil a lot and finding Amsoil can withstand much higher temperatures before it starts to break down than most. A side benefit was it lowered my max oil temperature by 40 degrees. Riding hard up the mountain on a 100 degree day my oil temp would hit 320. I saw that temperature on the way home from first buying Amsoil. The next day after changing the oil the temp only got to 280. It was the same temperature, same humidity, roughly the same time of day. Since changing my oil temp has never gone over 280.

I'm running Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic with the OEM Nissan filter (just changed it today actually). There's a mail-in rebate on the oil right now, so a 6-quart case ends up costing around $38 (bought mine on Amazon, and am thinking about stocking up).

Amsoil users

Anyone running their extented drain synthetic motor oils? Along with their filters? May look into amsoil in the future.
