What causes this? Busted CV and/or diff?

Crawling up an intermediate rock challenge, got hung up, backed up, attempted again (slowly), heard a "pop", got winched out. Now when in 4hi or 4lo there is a "popping" sound every rotation, drives perfectly fine when in 2 wheel, drove home two hours on interstate. Driver CV boot is tweaked. My theory is I broke some splines on the axle and that's why the boot is twisted. My question is (before I take it to the dealer on Monday) has anyone experienced this before and is the the CV joint/axle and/or differential tanked?

Thanks.

No knowing what mods you have done but my guess is it is the CV axle. CV and front diffs have been known to break for these years. The only thing is we have a live front diff so I would think it would make noise in 2wd too if it is that. Why bring it to the dealer. Why not take off the wheel and get to work. if it is the CV you should be able to tell really quickly just go down there and twist it or wiggle it.

Any updates? Most of the time when this type of stuff happens it is due to having wheel spin (a lot of rotational momentum) then you get traction and it sends a jarring force through the system and the weakest part breaks.
