I hate leg days!!! Single Leg Hack Squats followed by regular Hack Squats. Then did Leg Press for 3 sets followed by RDL's with 3 sets of straight bar curls. Ended miserable leg day with leg extensions and prone leg curls..

I love leg day though I don't feel like I did as much compared to Bi/Tri/chest day
Yeh, the only thing I really hate about leg Day is walking out!!! Lots of reps is a good thing, Bi's/Tri's/ Chest is a tough workout, I like Bi/Tri and Chest/Back on a 4 to 6 week set then go to Bi/Back and Chest Tri for 3 to 4 weeks. I've had great strength gains with this cycle..

I'm gonna get funny looks when I'm at the gym this evening.....legs means toe shoes....in all seriousness they are the best shoe I have found to wear doing legs.

I wear my Vibrams to the gym every time UNLESS I do cleans. I also prefer running in them by all counts.

I do leg deg in my college wrestling shoes. Just like goig barefoot but I have ankle support. Dint worry about looking like a tard in vibrams as phil Heath, reigning 3x mr Olympia, uses them on leg day since most gyms don't allow shoeless lifting any more due to insurance. But 100lb on a toe feels the same with or without shoes

Legs though dont necessarily need a lot of exercises as long as your doing quality movements with weight that'll get you where you want to be. A lot of people tend to not do it right or not do enough weight. I usually do about 5 exercises maybe 7 at the most. Legs youre using all the time so they dont need as much attention as other parts, but doing quality movements (squat, deadlift, hack squat, leg press). At least youre doing a leg day...youre ahead of 90% of most gym goers

Hey there,
Be careful with Thermogenics!!! Some of them can really get your heart rate racing, and make sure you pound the water. What kind are you using?

Personally I hate box jumps but after 12 knee surgeries you can understand why. Love the Kettlebell swings..

Cellucor D4, I've taken this stuff before and I react pretty well with it, other than being more awake and physically a bit warmer (I'm always warm anyways) I feel normal....and I start out by only doing one pill in the morning for the first week or more.

I've had Grenade before and that stuff did jack with my heart.....I stopped taking it as soon as I felt it getting out of rhythm.

it was good i hate thrusters with a passion but it was only 10 of them so it was quick. the 27 kb swings though got a little tiring.

I used cellucor d4 as well and i loved it. made my fat just sweat away. the new formula Super HD i think is crap...not the same effect as the D4

Wow it took some digging to find this thread.....I wish the search function would recognize and search for the word "gym." I knew this thread was out there.

Anyway, on to the matter at hand.

Can we have a discussion about motivation?

I need to find a way to get off my fat ass. But my problem is, I'm so laid back about everything, that there really isn't anything to motivate me. There's nothing driving me to get up at 5am and go out and do things. 9/10 days I'm doing something physical. So when I get home at the end of the day, I'm wore-ass-out and can't fathom working out. Drinking beer? yes. Working out? no. The other problem is I feel like I can't do the things I enjoy doing in this flat, humid, & insect infested wasteland. As far as activities....lets break it down:

I hate going to the gym. Everything is so fake. The wife likes to go, and I go with her every once in a while, but when I'm there I just want to listen to headphones as loud as possible to distract myself from the fact that I'm at the gym. If I go w/ the wife, all she wants to do is talk the entire time and do stuff WITH me....which means I can't listen to my music.

If I'm going to exercise, I want to do it outside in the real world. Everything here is flat and boring.

I love hiking. If I lived in the mountains, I'd do that all the time! But I don't have time to drive over an hour every time I want to do that.

Same with rock climbing (which I'm too fat for now....). Again, we have a "Rock Gym" but that sucks and is lame. It's just not as good as the real thing and I was always disappointed every time I went.

I'd also like to get back into paddling....but that is EXPENSIVE considering the kayak I'd have to buy to support my fat ass is well into/over $600, plus a second one for the wife, and with the kid due in October....gah! Money.

I don't mind riding bikes.....but again, it's a big ordeal to pack up the bikes and go somewhere that we won't most certainly be murdered by passing motorists.

In the winter, I'd love to go snowboarding. That was always a great workout. (and a 3 hour drive)

So I guess I'm just too damn picky. Maybe that needs to change.

Running....don't even get me started on running. I don't have the best knees to begin with, take that, and the fact that I'm damn near 280lbs and....well.....running.....no. There once was a time when I was trying to train myself to run because I was trying out for a bunch of police jobs. And that was a motivator for me. I'd be out there 2-3 times a week doing 2-3 miles per run. And I hated every......f'ing.....second of it. But I did it because I had to.

Can has halp? Suggestions? Ideas? It'll be a few years yet before we move to CO, and I think I'll do fine there, because all the outdoor activities that I enjoy are readily available. But nothing here is motivating me to get off my ass.

I feel the same way you do about the gym. I hate going and either putting up with the guys taking their time in the mirror or the ass hats using the squat rack for bench press. This is why I mostly enjoy running outdoors by myself, preferably on a trail somewhere.

7.5 miles yesterday, tried beating the thunderstorm and it didn't work out so well. Had to finish up while it was coming down like crazy, which was nice cause it cooled down considerably.

I know what you mean...exercise for the sake of exercise is too radically opposed to my normal need to do things in the most efficient fashion (LEAST effort).

I can only be motivated to exercise when there is something that makes it a means to an end, and even then, that end better be great.

I do better playing sports, as it doesn't FEEL like exercise, its just playing. I'm somewhat competitive by nature, so, when playing, I do tend to give it my all, and, therefore, get exercise. I was playing soccer 3-4 x a week, but blew out my knee, and, also snapped a plantaris, then blew the other knee, and, well, I could barely run let alone play soccer....and that caused me to gain ~ 60 lb as my metabolism slowed to a crawl w/o the running around (Not because of the added weight of the steel pins holding me together...).

So, for me at least....I need to do something that I enjoy AS the exercise, or, I probably will do nothing to burn off the avoirdupois I've accumulated.

And, yeah, there's money and inconvenience to DO stuff that I enjoy, same deal as you.

I think it IS being too picky....as, essentially, we are choosing to be fat instead.

That is the most basic way to look at it...the economics of choices. I am not an incredibly fit guy, so not preaching...just giving my insight regarding the exercise or not choices which I too have gone through several times. It is basic economics lesson in cost vs. benefit.

Working out costs a lot (not just money)...especially if you don't enjoy it or find it boring or painful or uncomfortable. In order for you to put yourself through that, you have to believe that there is a benefit greater in value to the effort required to exercise. Paying for more expensive hobbies takes away some discomfort or boredom of exercise, but at the additional cost of dollars and time. Is the increase in pleasure greater than the dollar and time cost of doing other activities?

The biggest problem is that working out for the sake of working out has no real benefit immediately if you don't enjoy it. It is an investment into your future health and you have a period of time to get the return of your investment. The flip side is that when I decide to gorge myself on pizza and beer more often, there is also a delayed health response to that...but a very immediate delicious response. Before I know it, I am gaining my weight back.

No one has ever eaten a pizza or cracked open a beer by accident. No one thinks eating an entire pizza and 6 pack alone is healthy...the problem is when we (me) become apathetic...and say...awww F it...it tastes awesome.

As far as motivation

The only thing that actually gets me motivated to be serious about losing weight is when I gain enough that my clothes are uncomfortable, and I feel uncomfortable in my own body...and I have to tell myself...I have no excuse other than laziness.

I make myself run. Not because I enjoy it...but because it is the easiest and most convenient way to get a work out. No special equipment, no need to drive anywhere, all I need is shoes. No excuses for not going...other than admitting to myself I am being lazy. I run away from my house until I am tired...and...well...I have to turn around and run back. Even if I do a quick 20 minute run, I am lapping everyone on the couch :)

I hate having to look at myself in the mirror, and admitting to myself I am just being lazy and letting myself get fat. I used to blame it on being out of college and not having a free gym...until my apartment complex had a gym. Then I blamed it on the gym there being too small...until I got a job with a nice gym in it. I blamed it on not being able to play sports like I used to love, until we had work sports leagues that I was too lazy to join.

All of these excuses...are just that. But I will tell you, when you exercise regularly and become more fit, those enjoyable activities become a heck of a lot easier and even more enjoyable. I'll never forget the one time I went snowboarding and all of a sudden I wasn't enjoying it like I used to because I was too out of shape.

Everyone has different motivations, but I just try to look at the bigger picture. It may be 30 minutes of pain tonight, but in 2 months, it will be worth it.

60 days from now, you will wish you started today :)

I have fun in the gym because I love to see progress. Progress is the only motivation you need. Do it for you and because you care about yourself. I diet not because I enjoy it but because it Gives me results. I am addicted to results. Pick a goal whether it is a 5k, tough mudder, losing 10lbs, or whatever you want it to be. Make it a goal that is realistic over a 2-3 month period. Take pictures during your journey so you get a real idea of what you are doing to help make your health and life better. Remember that real results come from a lifestyle change and not the 3 weeks infomercials promise you. Please let me know if I can answer any questions about gym, supplements, basic diet requirements. I'm not a certified trainer for anything but I do know what has/hasn't worked for me and others over the years.

A lot of good points. I definitely relate to the "not feeling comfortable in my own body." I shrugged off the weight gains and made excuses until I saw a picture of me and a group of friends taken at the lake. That was my wakeup call that I had let things get out of hand. I let the "it's only 5lbs" happen too many times and over the course of 2 years gained 65 lbs. I'm about a third of the way complete with my comeback. I think taking it slow and using small goals helps motivate me. Instead of trying to loose those 65lbs I loose a few a week and the success gets addicting. I have a friend that always says "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." I don't want to be skinny but he has a point. Instant gratification is just that, it goes away. Where as fitting into my older clothes, taking a shirt off on the boat are things that make me feel good for the long term.

I haven't really put a long term deadline on my goal either which has helped with the "pressure" of losing the weight. Every once in awhile I'll let myself have pizza and beer and not feel guilty about it. Life is too short not to enjoy it once in awhile.

I can tell you thing I miss going to the gym every day now that I'm in the road most I the time driving tankers. And if I dot have a shower I'm not working out bc I don't like smelling like sweaty butt afterwards. No thanks. But I know I'm going to cherish the gym time at home when I get it
