So I have been wanting to do a tdi swap since I had my yota and still want it with my xterra. It obviously won't be any time soon since I just spent what I was saving for the swap in my 4runner to buy the xterra. The comon engine for 4runner swaps was the 1.9 tdi and since the 2 trucks are comparable in size I figure that would be a good place to start. I did get the manual trans to make my life easyer with the swap and will be installing manual hubs so that the 4x4 system will be completely separated from the ecu. I found 1 person that did this but on a 2nd gen so I hope there will be less isues with the wireing. http://www.thenewx.org/forum/30-xterra-projects/164506-xterra-tdi-swap.html

Sounds like a great build man! The TDI engine is a good option as it is lighter than some other diesels and you can still get good power out of them. You also have the option of going with a mechanical injection pump if you want. Simplifies the wiring even more.

I would keep the efi as it makes tuning easyer and more exact. They are rated at 90hp stock but I have hear as much as 160 from a small tune and the injectors and pump from a auto.
