I went to get my off-road recreation pass today but didn't get it because I was missing some equipment on their list that is required in my town. I need to get a chain, a board, and recovery strap. I'm assuming a board would be any peice of would possibly a 8x2. I don't know what to even start looking for when getting a chain and recovery straps. I do have recovery points installed on my truck so that's not a problem. I was looking at amazon and the options are unlimited so I didn't even know where to start so if you guys could point me into the right direction I would be really helpful.

Yes. That strap would be fine. If anyone tells you that you need a chain, find one and then hit them with it. Because that's about all a chain is good for. NEVER use a chain for any kind of recovery. It's just plain dangerous.

just get some chain to placate the locals to get your permit, but never plan on using it. The wood is to place under a jack so that it will not sink into the sand. Also no straps with hooks on them.

Lastly, the factory jack should be fine correct? I want a high lift eventually when I lift the truck but that's all I have at the moment.

To use a hi-lift you'd need sliders to have a lifting point on a stock X....so, you'd get sliders first. If you think you'd one day get 33" tires, you'd want a BL.

If you think you'll get a BL, get the sliders for the BL so they'll fit better...but that means doing the BL first.

33s fit with no bl or sl. Just one of the reasons us 2nd gens are better! [emoji14]

I agree get a bottle jack. They are great and work far better then the factory one. And there cheap. The most expensive thing on your list is that stupid chain.

A good ARB or similar strap will suffice, but for really easy recoveries in soft sand, a kinetic rope like a Bubba Rope is well worth the money.

And you do not need sliders to use a Hi-Lift. Sliders certainly make it easier, but you can also use a Hi-lift with wheel straps like this: http://amzn.com/B00042KGWG

One last thing, to reiterate what everyone else has said, DO NOT use chains for recovery.

^ If you do use a high lift like that. you still need something to block up the wheel/axle. Unless it is to get unstuck

If you want to change a tire, and you are holding yourself up BY the tire, its not going to work by itself. (Hi-lift with tire hook accessory)

If all you are doing is picking up the tire to cram stuff under the tire, and/or jack stands, etc, to hold the axle/frame up before lowering it again, yeah, it can work.

The bottle jack is far more useful though...and less hassle than taking out the hi-lift, and the accessories, etc.

Where the bottle jack has trouble is when you're in rocks or a swamp, etc...when you need to go under water to set the jack under the diff or frame, or the rocks are too close, and the jack can't fit under where it needs to, etc.
