Well, with most of the mountains around here on fire, maybe we should consider a weekend Puerco X day outing this summer. Anyone? Kevin? Rok?

Youve got some good tread lightly points there but, with the drought, im not sure that there IS any water.

I could be down for an X weekend... I really want to play but dont know nuthin' and i think, as always, never go alone, always travel in packs or pairs. Did everyone see 172hours about that climber?

I'll jump in here too. I am moving to Alamogordo in October. We used to live there when I was really young and I remembered loving the Las Cruces, White Sands, Cloudcroft areas so I am getting pretty excited! It's gonna be a looooooong drive in a huge moving truck with the X on a dolly though...

I do know I will have to upgrade the steering and up-armor a bit if I want to go crawling around on the rocks out there... Might want to carry some fix-a-flat as well ;)

Oh yeah, Puerco is no place to wheel alone, for a variety of reasons. Would love to go out there for a day with some other Xs...I usually get stuck with heeps...

I'm in. Just let me know when.

How 'bout a Ouray/Teluride/Silverton weekend as well? I'm headed up for the 4th of July weekend but I am always looking for excuses to wheel up there.

Cap'n,
Touch base when you get down here and we'll connect. It'll be nice to have a playmate.

That would be awesome, just don't know what kind of time I have left this summer other than weekends...

There are some great trails around Las Cruces. Some of them would be a little rough/impossible in a stock rig though.

I wouldn't want to go too far south for a few months. Could make for a good run in late fall. Desert wheeling in 100 degree heat, sucks. Especially if someone breaks something.

Welcome to the Nation.

I'm with NMTerras when it comes to the video... there seemed to be a good deal of rookie nonsense on that run. Give them a shot though, you never know what/who you may find there.

If you really want to hook up with some hardened wheelers, you may want to drive the extra half hour to meet up with the Las Cruces Four Wheel Drive Club. They put on the Chili Challenge each year which has been a nationally recognized event in past years. I used to wheel with a few of them when I lived in EP back in the 80's and 90's; some of them are still there and have been beating their rigs on the trails out there ever since.

I'm not sure if they are still accessible but there are also some really nice, mellow trails in the Franklins that are perfect for cutting your teeth on. I'll call a couple of friends in the morning and see if they are still open.

We've done several Teluride/Ouray/Lake City weekend runs; if you can leave mid-day Friday, it can be a nice casual run that gets you home in time for dinner Sunday Night.

This was taken a few years ago... about 10 miles south east of Ouray. Temps were in the upper 60's... in late July.

Oooh, purty! Well, I'm game if anyone else is... Or maybe plan somethin' fer September/October? We can play down here all winter, too. Gunna go find the trails around Cruces tomorrow after work. Any suggestions? The Cruces 4-wheel group has nothing planned on their site so i'm gunna see if any of my red cross buddies are up for an adventure. I really need a new camera.

Thanks man. I've put a lot of work into the Tundra since that picture was taken; I'm about to install a 4" lift on it this summer.

October/November is wheeling season down there, I'll definitely be up for an EP run by then. We should also get an XN group together to do Chili Challenge in February.

Sounds like you have a good plan for finding some local spots to wheel. You're right... it's usually best to wheel with others but if you're smart about it, you can run mellow trails on your own. Four rules will keep you safe:

1. Never leave without telling someone where you are going and when you plan to return.
2. Never travel down a road that you aren't willing to hike out if you get stuck.
3. Always carry a mobile phone and keep tabs on signal strength... it may help with rule#2 if you need to hike out.
4. Never cross an obstacle that you don't think that you can get back across if you have to turn around.

Your Ham radio will definitely come in handy, there are a bunch of repeaters out there. Have fun out there, EP/Las Cruces has a lot of great wheeling spots.

Awesome terrain and rigs. Hopefully, I'll be able head down there from CO to roll with the NM crew one day!

Cruecible reporting in. I live in the NE heights of Albuqerque but have done most of my wheeling experience on the west side of town and through the Puerco. I went to the Flash Dash at the Puerco back in October and while it was a blast with 90 rigs there, I was the only Xterra as most of them were Heeps. I'd love to find some good spots around the Sandias as I've never gone back in there for any wheeling purposes, and it's a bit closer to me than the Puerco.

Hey NM wheelers... just wanted to let y'all know that the Puerco has been under unusual scrutiny lately. NMTerras and I were mildly hassled last year but it appears that they have the Bernalillo Sheriff's Department into play recently:

This kinda thing has been going on for a decade or more but this time things seem a little more intense. I know a bunch of guys on that forum and they don't usually exaggerate.

What a bummer, especially now that I'm more motivated than ever to go wheeling. Might need to start looking into cedar crest areas if they exist for wheeling.

Yeah, while it's not technically "closed" yet, the time may be coming sooner rather than later. As far as cedar crest area, there is basically one, and only one, option, and that's Cedro Peak. Now, I do think there's some fun stuff to do in the Jemez and other places within an hour or so....

Those both sound like really good options! I've heard from a couple coworkers that Jemez has some really nice and scenic wheeling. That Coyote Canyon spot looks like fun too, those pictures are awesome

It was a blast! I just couldn't tackle some of obstacles and had to take quite a few bypasses. Hopefully I'll get to try those spots out I missed this next go around ;)

That's me driving around in the background, taking a bypass, making a sad face, while others were taking pics of cool obstacles:(
