The problem with leds being a single color behind a tv is that the point of ambient lighting is to match the dominant color on your screens so it splashes against the back wall. This takes your eye's focus off of the singular point of light (the screen) and reduces strain. That said, if you are going to do behind tv or monitor leds, you should really go with a smarter led system than one you would have to manually change each time.

Last year or the year before someone was marketing a TV that did exactly what you're talking about. LED's on the back of the TV would project ambient light onto the wall behind the TV that would dynamically match the screen edge colors for any given screen picture. I think it may have been a SHARP Aquos. It was a cool effect, but ultimately a gimmick that no one really needed.

EDIT: I was worng. It wasn't a TV itself that did it, but an add-on called Lightpack. I saw it on Kickstarter. It is available HERE for anyone who is interested. I might look into it myself, since I am about to get a new TV.

I'm pretty sure you're right about the TV having it built in though... I remember a couple of years ago there were at least two brands that had the feature, I thought it was kinda corny when I saw it at best buy. I can't find anything on it through google, however.

Hah! Of course you realize that I have already done this in certain places in my house. I'll grab some pics when I get home.

LG marketed a TV a few years ago that did that. Nobody bought it.

The bed.

It kinda floats. So it needed some LEDs.

These are some LED bars that are RGB and can be any color I want. I have bunches of RGB strip in the garage that I have yet to purpose.

Except this.... Which is actually in the garage

Also an RGB strip. But it wasn't quite long enough to make it all the way around the tv. Whatever. Garage.

Lightpack is not meant for regular TV. It needs an OS to install the software on. So unless you have a media center pc, no dice. On the other hand, I saw light pack when it first hit kick starter and it is pretty awesome. I just haven't bought one yet...surprisingly.
