Maybe your old headlight stalk wore out and you need to replace it? Maybe you accidentally broke it while making whoopie in the front seat? Maybe you want to add OEM fog lights to your truck, and you want it to look as OEM as possible so you want to replace your plain headlight stalk with an OEM one that includes the fog switch? Maybe you're like me and you want to remove your OEM fog lights and replace your fog light stalk with a plain one?
Whatever your reasoning may be, here's a quick how-to on replacing your headlight stalk.
Step 1)
Locate and remove the five (5) Phillips head screws in the lower cover on your steering column:
Here they are labeled. #4 is hiding around the corner and is in the same position as #5:
Step 2)
Once you remove the 5 screws, you'll be able to lift the top cover away from the bottom cover. There are a number of clips that hold the two together, so be careful not to break them.
Here's what you'll see underneath the upper cover:
Step 3)
If you currently have OEM fogs, you'll have 2 large-ish wiring harnesses and one small one that come out of the steering column and connect to the base of your headlight stalk. If you currently do not have OEM fogs, you'll only have the 2 larger harnesses.
Either way, disconnect the wiring harness from their respective locations:
Step 4)
Once the harnesses are disconnected, turn your attention to the two small Phillips head screws securing the headlight stalk to the steering column. They screw in from the left-hand side of the column. Remove them:
Step 5)
Once the screws are removed, just slide your headlight stalk straight out to the left. Flip that bad boy over and check out all the circuitry! Oooooh!
Installation of the new stalk is the reverse of these steps.
If you're like me, and you're changing your fog light-equipped stalk to a non-fog equipped stalk, you may want to cover up the small wiring harness coming from your steering column. There's no real need to I suppose, but it never hurts. I used a small nylon cap. Electrical tape would work as well.
So there you have it, quick and easy. I recommend checking all your light functions immediately after doing this, just to be sure everything works. Headlights, turn signals, high beams, fog lights (if equipped), and hazard flashers.
