I've never heard it's that but I would buy a hitch basket and keep everything outside of the Xterra if I were you. You'd also be able to use it for other things as well. You can probably find one used on craigslist.

When I had my X I had a hitch mounted basket that I used. If I didn't have it the animals went in my roof basket that I made and if it was too large to get up there on my own (heavy deer) it went on a tarp in my x. If you put animals in your X I will suggest getting a Rubbermaid with a lid to put them in if it'll fit.

If you use your roof make sure that animal is strapped down...

I put a coyote on my roof and took a corner too fast... it fell off the roof in the middle of the road... this was a Sunday morning and the family in the minivan behind me in their sunday best about **** themselves. They thought I hit it... you should have seen their faces when I put it back on my roof...

I keep more bungee cords in my Xterra now...

I mentioned the tarp because my folks mentioned having one they no longer use last time I talked to them. They only used it for hauling wood or something like bags of cement that tend to make a mess. So I didn't know if it would be effective at prevent blood from filling all the seams in the Xterra. I've got a trailer I can tow, but I was trying to get away with not having to take it. Looks like I'll have a couple extra buddies coming along now, so the trailer will probably be a must or else we couldn't fit our gear, three fellas and whatever deer we manage to take.

I'll look into a basket though. I have one for a 1-1/4" receiver that I used on my old Saab. I was never very happy with it as it always flopped around a bit when on the car, and required some planning when you loaded up the car because once it was on, accessing anything in the hatch was nearly impossible.

I used the hitch basket like the guys above. You'll find that the basket meant for a 2" receiver has more weight to it and won't flop around like the one on a smaller basket. It'll allow you to be able to throw all your gear in the hatch or up top, if need be, and then have the deer, coyote, etc (likely not an elk) on the basket, out of the cab. I did the tarp thing one year and though I had it all good to go but unless you tape it up, there is a good chande you'll still get some blood in your carpet.
