I was looking up so various ways of communicating and ran across this:

Its a neat concept. When towers go down or you're out of cell range you can use your phone to at least message people nearby that also have one. It's also only 2 watt output so the realistic range is fairly short.

The major problem I see is that its point to point. Basically if I want to message Jack but hes not in range I'm out of luck. The FCC does not allow daisy chaining them right now which would make this much more practical so if I want to talk to Jack whos out of range but I can reach Sally who can reach Jack then everything is good and I can talk to Jack then.

Even without being able to daisy chain I could see this being somewhat useful at events like WENT. A lot of the time I was there I was out of cell range, though I have a CB, it could have helped a little bit if it was needed. With daisy chaining maybe everybody could have messaged eachother no matter where they were.

I wonder if they will come out with a vehicle mount or signal booster.

This area seemed to be the best area to post this, if it needs to be moved feel free.

Neat device. You may also want to look at ham radios. You can pick one up for less money, have more power to transit and you can do more with them. There is a test you need to take, but it is easy. Ham radios can also link to repeaters to achieve the daisy chaining you described. Let me know if you want more info.

Yeah i have a handheld ham but i need to take the test and i have a guy i work with that knows all about them.

I just wanted to share this because it's a neat concept that could be fairly useful if they make a few changes.
