I am in the thinking/ planning process of converting the winch that I currently have and use to from a steel cable to synthetic line. at this time I have a champion 8000Lb winch with steel cable, sitting in a receiver cradle ( going to try to properly install it in my bumper soon)
my questions are:
1. since I have used this winch for a couple years with the steel cable, is there any issues with me just sanding down the drum to ensure there are no nicks and burrs on it good enough?
2. I am planning of changing the rollers out of my current fairlead to the daystar ones designed for synthetic since I am soon to be required to have a front licence plate. any issues to be expected with this idea?

I switched with zero issues... The weight difference is huge and I could notice it right away driving around town.

I wouldn't worry about burs on the drum... If anything take some steel wool to it..

I only wish I would have bought a much longer line... I have a 80' line and in reality I can only use about 65' of the line...
Synth requires you to keep a spoil around the drum for pulls.. I know cable does to but mine is only attached with a wrap of tape.

To me id say 100' min of line and be done with it...

I changed the 125' steel cable and roller fairlead out to synthetic and the billet fairlead and shaved off almost 40 lbs.

Only downfall is they recommend changing it out every few years due to degradation. Kinda spendy....

They make uv coating for them from my understanding

this all depends on how your winch is mounted. If it is exposed to the sun then you should change it out more often. If it is tucked into a bumper then you are good for a little longer.

well I guess that the idea of going to a synthetic line with this winch are not going to happen. I sent Champion a quick email and their response is that the model winch I have can not accommodate a synthetic line because the drum is made out of aluminium.

looks like I am going to buy a better winch ( either a warn or a smittybilt ) when/ if I get transferred across the country and keep this one as a rear mounted winch or might sell it not sure yet

as for the licence plate mount, I found one on e-bay for $22 Canadian but they want $35 for shipping. but I did find a how-to from a jeep forum to be able to build one myself.

I may be wrong, but that sounds like a load of something.
