Weather is a nice addition, but not necessary. You're paying for a bunch of bells and whistles there too. I would find an inexpensive radio, an antenna, and a buddy or shop with an SWR meter to get started.

What is your intended use? Trail comms or talking around the city?

I guess what is cheap? 25$ or is it 100$ or ? I'm planning on using it on the trail and around the city. I would like to get a an old school whip antenna. That I can attach the base to the rear fender and the head to the front A piller for when I go thru carwash.

$100 is way to much to spend on a cb, and I will tell you that the old whip antennas are a pain in the ass compared to a 3ft fiberglass mast. Just remember to put a spring at the base and it is fine.

The last person that we had with a long whip antenna wheeling with us, we made him take it off because it got to be such a pain. literally spotters were getting hit by it after it got stuck behind branches and stuff.

Sounds like I need to rethink this CB deal. I thought a 100 was a good price and I also thought that CB's work on line of sight. Higher antenna longer range. I'll do some more R&D and get back with you guy's. 25$ that is really cheap they must have little kids in china making them.

I have that radio. And it's pretty good. It does have a lot of unnecessary functions but overall it works really well. And the 3 color LED display is cool.

I spent 40$ on my radio on amazon. It does what a cb is supposed to do. Transmit and receive. I don't see a reason to have more than that personally, and why spend a ton of money on something you are probably going to use only when wheeling? Sometimes I'll turn it on if I hit highway traffic, but normally you have some redneck trucker singing into the mic or talking about some dude he just banged at a truck stop.

O gobble Trucker Clock who wants it!!!!!! I'm going to a CB shop today to discuss with them what I'm after. The truck stop is right across the road and a GO-GO dancers on the other corner so it should be just seedy enough to get some CB advice. Hell I might get a BJ while I'm there.

All of the CB's that they had were high end but the man there was pretty helpful. I'll get the radio from amazon but I'll purchase the antenna from them. They will even tune it for me.

I have the el cheapo cobra DX19 IV and have never had a problem related to the radio. It does what it needs to do and does it well.

I have a 19 also, serves its purpose on the trail. Had a CB shop tune it up from 2 amps to 15 works like a champ. Tuck's nicely under the radio.

They are good radios but fitting it in anything smaller that a full sized truck is a huge pain. I use to run one of the 19s and it was a good size and simple. I personally am looking to get one of the cobra 75 wx radios for my xterra. It is very compact wih all the controlls on the microphone and it has built in weather radio. As for a whip I use a 4 foot center loaded whip with a big spring at the base.
