There isn't a sub-forum for this one....so I made this!

I've always enjoyed the bow and arrow. I inherited a recurve from my grandfather when he passed. After that I purchased a compound bow.

I haven't loosed an arrow in a whole lot of years now. And I'd like to get back into it. And Jess wants to do it too so thats a bonus. Plus it's something I could do in the back yard.

Who here can lend some advice to get us started?

I'll make a sub forum sometime just so I can use my admin powers haha. I shot bow for years when I was a kid. I feel I would be much better now that I'm stronger. I always enjoyed it.

This. I had a compound that was tweaked/tuned to 38lbs. Not bad for a 10 year old, right? Now, I almost wish I had it in me to do it all over again, because I know I could almost double what I did at 10yo.

My cousin shoots competitively. She's amazing. I've seen her do some incredible things over the last few years.

My one PE credit in college was archery and I enjoyed the hell out of it in scouts and Indian guides. I would love to get a recurve and do it again. MK1 has expressed an interest too, so I might should do that.

Scouts for me too and a bit later on in life. Shot a compound bow a few time but once my uncle put a rifle in my hands well the bow kinda stopped. Would love to get a crossbow.

Had a 50# compound bow as a kid and loved it. I'd like to get another one or a cross bow.

I used to teach archery back in the '70's among a bunch of other outdoor stuff, never compound equipment though back then. It is a lot of fun, and compared to buying ammunition, etc, for some other fun stuff, not that expensive in the long run.

I always found target shooting to be boring though, and prefer moving/varied targets...and for a lot of archery now a days, that I see at least, other than hunting, its hard to find varied shooting opportunities.

There are people who, with the new compound stuff with counter weights and sights, etc...who can take out gnats at 50 meters, etc. If you like the idea of doing the "split arrow/Robinhood" type stunts, that's the way to go...except he did it with a traditional curved bow, etc. :p (And was a character/not real, etc)

:D

To me its more rewarding to hit 3" circles from horseback at a gallop....even if gnats are safe.

I love archery hunting. Been shooting a recurve since I was 7 and have a compound now that I use. I've shot boat loads of turkey's and am working on sticking a deer!

LOL

In NJ we don't need guns or bows to get deer, bumpers take more deer than all of those combined.

I'm glad I found this!

I was given a Bear Whitetail Hunter as a gift. It's a compound bow with an adjustable draw. I can shoot it just fine, but after a while my arm gets fatigued.

I wanted to carry that around in the back of the X, but it's just too large and heavy. I'm looking at getting a takedown recurve with a lighter draw to reduce fatigue. I just started shooting my friend's recurve, and I really like it.

The takedown would be ideal because I could store it on the LOBO rack with 30 or so arrows. That would be nice. This is a new experience for me, so I'm hoping to have some fun with it :)

Just picked up a compound bow a few days ago. Love it. Glad to see there is a small faction of XN Archers

One of the reasons I chose an x back in 2002 was because of archery. I needed a 4x4 with more interior space to house all of my bow hunting gear for annual trips back up to Michigan each fall. Its hauled my stuff 2500 miles RT every year the past 13 years. I had a fiberglass limbed longbow given to me back in 1979 and I've had a bow ever since. I'd recommend going down to your local pro shop, or one of the big box sporting goods stores and test drive one. Also, there are tons of bows available on craigslist.

That's quite a hike! What area do you go to?

Also I finally picked this guy up; dogs not included:

Didn't realize how fuzzy those pictures were...

It's a PSE Razorback Recurve and it's been an awesome starter bow, and the takedown fits wonderfully up in my LOBO rack with a dozen arrows.

I got the 25# draw because I'd like to shoot more than ten zombies without wearing my arm out ;) It's been a lot of fun so far.

It is a hike, but I wouldn't miss it for the world. A family friend has a cabin up by Le Roy, south of Cadillac. We hunt the Cadillac State Forest. Not a bad place to off-road either. Lots of hill climbs and water holes/mud.

That takedown recurve is sweet. Nice lobo addition.

If I was just getting started in archery I would check the local archery stores or craigs list and get a used bow to make sure you like it. I have been bow hunting for almost 10 years now. The challenge and rush of getting close enough to game to take it with a bow is what makes it fun to me. If you get a used compound bow off of CL makes sure and have it checked out by an archery tech to make sure it is still within timing specs and that there is not any other problems with it. If the bow ends up needing new strings, cables or doesnt have a sight or rest then the additional items could end up being as much as what you paid for the bow.
