Been thinking of building one myself. How does one go about getting all the little things to do that? What parts are FFL sellers only? Is it possible to get everything needed without going through an FFL guy?

I WANNA PLAY!!!!!

You can get everything with out a FFL except the "lower", pic below, that is the only thing that has to go through a FFL.

Just noticed that lower is for a full auto.... you can't get that. :) not with out a butt ton more paper work and more money. Also most lowers do not come with the trigger and everything already in there.

Kelly is the man he built his and can tell you more.

Actually that is a semi auto lower Tommy but with HK style pictogram FA selector markings. A FA AR/M16 lower has a 3rd fire control pin hole located just above the selector for the auto sear.

If you look at this pic you will see two pins oriented diagonally behind the mag release button, hammer and trigger pins, and the 3rd FCG pin that is for the auto sear.

And yeah I built mine and another one....and another one....and...:p You get the picture....I have built quite a few.

As Tommy said the only part that must be sent to an FFL is the lower as for some retarded reason this is what the BATF considers to be the "firearm" on the M16, M4, AR-15 family of weapons. It is possible to completely go around the FFL by using what is called an 80% lower receiver that you and ONLY YOU must finish the remaining 20% of the machining functions. For you it would not be hard to do but the jigs and specialized tooling to finish it can be pricey.

There are hundreds of shops that specialize in selling the parts needed to build an AR, you don't really build it you assemble it :p, and you just have to wade through the crap to find the good ones. If you want to build one Cycle and want some quality reliable vendors I have pages of sites saved in my favorites for the AR. :D

Nice Ron! I'm thinking of piecing one together as well. Just need to know what those pieces are lol I usually buy a gun that is already put together. I REALLY like the Bushmaster AR.

Thanks "Jo"

The cool thing is you can get a decent AR for around $700 now a days.

Yeah my buddy built his AR15/M4 hybird and it looks awesome so im slowly trying to build mine similar to his!

My S&W M&P-15 as she sits right now. All MOE equipment (grip, forearm, collapsible stock, rear BUIS, 5 magazines) and a Sight-Mark Holographic sight. Yes, I know it's a cheap optic, but I've had about 400 rounds through the gun since mounting and truing it and it has not failed me yet. When it does, I'll replace it with an EOTech. Probably going to rebuild this upper soon with a different fore grip and gas block, and add a forward BUIS. And I'm going to build another upper that's more suitable for long range shooting, but that's just going to have to wait for a while.

Can't decide if I want to build one or buy one. I REALLY wanna build one, but I don't know enough about the components to make a smart buy. AR15.com is almost an overload of info, but I don't know what manufacturers to stay away from.

It's easy. Maybe we need a "How To Build a Lower" thread?

I came here to post a pic and I realized I don't have any pics. :(

Well, I just parted ways with my first AR (I only say 'first' because I will have another one), but I got $1100 for it so I don't feel too bad. That's another grand in the bank while the wife and I shop for a house, and, I've a feeling that grand may end up being all that's left after a down payment and closing costs. But then, I will have a garage or workshop where I plan to start with a blank lower and build the exact rifle I want. :D

Nope, the guy at Ft. Hood never called me back, and to be honest, he was better off buying a plain jane AR off the shelf at a local gun shop, rather than a customized rifle. He was looking to get something as close to Army issue as possible to use in his free time to improve his scores at the range.
I ended up selling it to my brother-in-law's coworker for a $100 more than my minimum asking price, and he was super happy because it was exactly what he wanted. I even surprised him when I threw in the tactical bag!

And, oh yes, the hunt for a house with a garage is on!

M&P 15 Sport with Magpul MOE furniture.

There's not anything wrong with a Sport model M&P 15 IMO, but if I could do it over again I would've bought one with a fold down front sight and it would've come with your standard upper with forward assist and dust cover. I got this one for $650 maybe a month before Sandy Hook, back when I wasn't sure how addicted I'd get. Word of advice-you will become addicted.

Right now the only plans I have for this one are a MIAD or MOE grip, good red dot, and some more mags and ammo!

If the market ever comes back to like it was before Sandy Hook I think I want to build one, doesn't look too hard and now that I've taken mine apart and put it back together a few times it doesn't scare me anymore.

I would just recommend getting a red dot with a mount to have your BUIS in the lower 1/3 co-witness. I had mine in an absolute co-witness mount and it drove me crazy.

Yeah that's what I'm gonna do. A guy at work has a Magpul edition M&P 15 with an Aimpoint on a Larue mount and I like it ok. In the future I think I'd like the ability to flip down the front site better though b

I'd be paying almost as much for the optic and mount as I did for the rifle, but the way I look at it it's going to go on a nicer rifle in the future and I want it to last.
