About to get my 1st Xterra

2006 off-road 177k km, silver
Going after work to hopefully close the deal. Honestly thought my Xterra dreams were all but gone, but thankfully spite has me motivated. I absolutely hate that it's silver, only because every car I've owned has been silver. My lovely wife won't let me go full redneck and pixelate camouflage, so I'll have to be creative. Very Xcited for this, as long as it all checks out being SMOD free of course...

Welcome in! As long as it's SMOD free, you'll have a great platform to build on.

Even if it does have the SMOD, fixing it is worth it.

Replace the transmission, radiator, and flush the cooling system. Not cheap, but it's an X and will last 300+

Sent from the 5th circle via directionally confused otters

Its arguable that you don't need to replace the trans if you don't find the strawberry froth evident in the coolant, trans lines, or drain plug.

I'm not sure the price of doing all the work that you just mentioned, but if I pay 6k and whatever on top of that. Could I not just buy an early Pro4X.
I am on somewhat of a budget, and am happy to do the hose-line mod.
I would much prefer to avoid the SMOD all together...

So when I look at this after work I should check the trany fluid? Is there more to it than that. Lots of info on SMOD and how to avoid it, but I haven't seen anything on detection...

When I bought mine, I asked to check a lot of little things. The dealer let me check the radiator and transmission fluids. I was careful in my explanation of why I wanted to check. Check for froth or a light tinge in the transmission lines (either on the filler cap or on the drain plug). I'll be "strawberry" in color if there is a real problem. Supposedly, there is a way to check the radiator p/n to see if its aftermarket or updated OEM, but I am unaware of the details.

When you test drive, make sure it shifts naturally. Be sure to get it to change gears pretty hard. Try to achieve kick-down (when you want to accellerate hard up a hill, for example). Basically, the trans will shift from 4->2 (or some sort) and will require a brake and a clutch to disengage and quickly reengage for the correct gear. It'll be a pretty good bump, but if it struggles to find a gear or studders bad, fo-get about it.

Just got back from a test drive. Fluids are clean. Took it for a run, uphill like you suggested. Shifting was smooth as silk. A couple issues, very small spots of rust on the front fender, ripped seat and the coolest between the seats the lid is wobbly. Wear and tear mostly. Going back Wednesday to finalize...

Also, regarding smod:
This info was blatantly lifted from another site
Radiator part numbers

21410-EA200 [seldom referenced, but may have been installed in some very early 2005’s.]

21410-EA205 [2005 – either 2/09 or 8/09. Listed on some parts websites as P/N 21460-EA205. There is some confusion as to when these were used. Some literature states until 2/09 and other literature states 8/09. P/N IS ASSOCIATED WITH SMOD. ]

21460-EA215 [2005 - either 2/09 until 8/09, see above. Listed as discontinued and replaced by 21460-9CAOE on Nissan parts websites. P/N IS ASSOCIATED WITH SMOD]

21460-EA265 [production dates unknown other than my own Xterra built in 09/05. P/N IS ASSOCIATED WITH SMOD.]

21460-ZL11A [8/09 through 2010 model year, isolated reports of SMOD, however I have not been able to verify.]

21460-ZL31A [production dates unknown. Listed as discontinued on Nissan parts websites , no known reports of SMOD.]

21460-9CAOE [2011 – 2015 model years – no known reports of SMOD] This is the part number for the most current version as of 11/16.

I think one can be confident that the risk of SMOD is nonexistent with the 21460-9CAOE radiator, and probably also with the 20410-ZL31A radiator. It appears that there is some risk with the 20410-Z11A version, and the 21410-EA200, 21410/21460-EA205, 21460-EA215, and 21460-EA265 versions are ticking time bombs.

There appears to be a hiccup in my plans as it would seem that I am 1K short. I don't understand this, the happy gobbles are against me. I don't want to loose out on this. I may have to let go of some watches :tears2:

I was looking at the carfax maintenance record and the previous owner really kept on top of things. I see in 2012 a transmission flush was done along with a few other things, tune-up, tire rotation ect. Should I be alarmed at the flush or is this a common thing done much like an engine flush which I do every oil change...
Once I gain possession of the X I plan to do the bypass to avoid SMOD. Now is there an idiots guide tutorial explain everything I would need, like type of hoses, clamps ect. I saw a YouTube video on it but I just don't want to be usin subpar hoses or anything. Very nervous I must say yet eXcited at the same time. Did I just pee, yes I did...

Spoke with the shop selling the Xterra. They are going to do the mod for smod before I take it Friday. Going to be a slow build at first. So many great builds here not sure where to start...

Doing the bypass is best thing you can do. Is it officially yours now or not till Friday? I'm actually surprised they'll do the bypass.

I found this at my local auto parts dealer. Is this the right one, I could probably get them to install it before I take possession as 6k cash is a big influence...

That's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much money. You can get a decent cooler for $60-70US if you order online.
I thought so. Who do you recommend, do they ship to Canada and is there a specific cooler. I just saw on amazon around your price range but they are called universal coolers.

This is truly sad. I'm on Carid and I am trying to find the 2 shock or dampers or what ever it is called for the hatch. But because of my lack of lingo I cannot find what I am looking for. Any suggestions, hatch hardware maybe...
Thanks guys in advance...

"Lift Cylinder"

Also known as a "hatch strut." There are better options though, especially if you want to use your lift gate as a engine hoist.
