I just gotta ask this stupid question......when I close the back hatch, what turns off the interior lights? I looked everywhere on the hatch door and the door/hatch channel and cannot see any switch like on the doors that compresses to turn off interior lights. Is there a mercury switch somewhere? Just had to ask!

I'm not positive, but I believe the "switch" is within the latch mechanism inside the hatch.

Not sure though, but I'm curious to see if anybody knows for sure.

Looks like it. Somewhere. The lock actuator and the door sensor are on separate plugs, but both are down by the mechanism. Maybe if I ever remove the hatch plastic I'll take a closer look.

Everything else in my driveway has the switch in the latch itself so I guess I'm assuming that's true of the Xterra. But, I'm being pretty useless here cause I don't know for sure either...lol.

There's a switch built into the latch mechanism. At least, the 2nd gen does it this way. I double checked by using a pen to close the dog in the latch, and the light went out. When I pulled the handle to release it, light came back on. Hatch was wide open the whole time.
