you will want to get a pair of CEL eliminators, while you are at it. Get the 90deg ones, they are easiest to do while you have everything apart.

Thanks Granite... the price for the RR's are the same as AC's. I'll have to contact them to see if the additional parts for the install are the same as well.

Chixterra...you live in the same state/county as I do, we both have the same inspection laws. Your locals are less strict on the noise than mine are.

I've never had to have my vehicle inspected?

Here is mine. It's a 23" Cherry Bomb Glasspack. I love the sound it makes and being a V6 it isn't overly loud. I can't even hear it with the radio on.

Hey Fellas, If you want a specific muffler let me know, I carry Dynomax, rugged ridge, and magnaflow. If there is something specific you want, PM me and
i will set it up for you.

I just had my factory y pipe cut and a dual in single out Magnaflow 12258 thrown up in there. That same day I went with a K&N filter. It has made a huge difference in torque and fuel economy. I broke it in with a 900 mile round trip to Coal Creek and it is nice and quiet when I want and no so quiet when I want. ;) Highly recommend this setup. My local shop did all the work and muffler for 164 and some change.

My wife thinks it loud, but she hasn't driven it yet to feel the difference in the pedal.

I have the Calmini catback exhaust system and love the deep throaty sound and drones. With the added K&N, it made a difference. Going to go with a Volant intake pretty soon.

Very nice, thanks for all the responses everybody! I think when it's time for a muffler, I'll be doing a dual-in, single-out set up by cutting the tail off of the OEM y-pipe. Not sure which muffler I'd go with, but I've got plenty of time to decide before I get there.

For anyone who wonders what its like with no muffler. I cut mine off right before the muffler so it exited under the drivers side.
It sounds awesome!! But it drones like no other!!!!!!

So just to break it down.

To fix the factory manifold leak I need to replace the headers sounds like recommended brand is Doug Thorley
And then for sound and performance I would want a Nismo Catback Exhaust

Whats left?

Honestly I wish there was a full exhaust replacement to get me a deep throaty somewhat loud tone but also get me the performance like a full exhaust kit. I installed a Borla Exhaust kit on my friends 350z and that sounded great but he just went on Borla Exhausts and found the 350 full exhaust kit.
Any options like that anywhere online for the 2001 X?

Most exhaust companies sell whole exhaust kits...im not sure what you are asking but I would think they easiest but more expensive thing to do is have a muffler shop copy the stock bends and just replace ALL the pipes...but insert a new muffler of your choice.

What besides a new muffler would give it a mean DEEP growl

You're like me. You want a V8 sound that your just not gonna find on an Xterra. If it was out there I'm sure more people would have it. I've come to the conclusion that I'm never going to mess with the exhaust on my X because I will never be satisfied with the way a V6 exhaust sounds after having exhaust on two previous V8 vehicles.

define mean...haha. The nismo catback with headers (AC's in my case) needs a resonator added or a bigger muffler in my opinion. Its buzzy around 2600-3000 rpm in my case, but it screams above 3k, but it is also really loud (which i'm fine with), it definitely has a mean bark to it on a hard downshift from 3rd to 2nd. I love the sound above 3k, i'd call it mean, but i dislike the buzz, but i'm not that motivated to do anything about it for the small rpm band it happens in. This vid kinda sucks noise wise, it was taken with the back windows down, but it might give you an idea. I'll try and take another when i'm on the interstate and I can get some resonance off concrete wall.

I have the flowmaster super 40 on mine. It's just the muffler with the 2 rear cats hollowed out and I love the way it sounds. I don't think it has the V8 sound but I did have 1 person ask if I had a V8 in it. I'll try and post a video if I can.

There has got to be a mean sound out there I mean some of the v6 Mazda's on my old forum sounded way more truck like then my xterra with an aftermarket exhaust

Mean sound example I don't think this is my same xterra model but it is an xterra so this is closer to what I am going for

That's a second gen X. Bigger engine and more power, meaner sound. I just put Flowmaster Super 44 on mine and I really like it. It sounds great and the X feels a lot more responsive.

I do wish I had a deeper tone like that video a few post up but here is my $15 cherry bomb glass pack I found on ebay. The little soup can silencer muffler next to the spare is still attached.

Im ordering my new muffler tonight for my dual setup. Im going with a Cherry Bomb Extreme and itl cost me $100 for the muffler and 2 black tips and a local muffler guy is going to install it for me for $200 so Il post up a video after I have it installed here in the next few weeks. Im replacing a cracked manifold as soon as I get a chance before I have the muffler put on.

Sounds pretty good, but I agree - a deeper tone would be nice. On a side note: What's with the little "soup can" thing next to the spare? That's not OEM...is it? My '04 doesn't have one. I wonder what yours would sound like with the Cherry Bomb but with that little can removed...?

Okay so for awhile now I have been thinking my truck sounds like a fart can. Well I bought a flowmaster 40 series on craigslist for cheap cheap and it only has 50 miles on it. My question is does anyone have a good video of a first gen with the 40 on?

Sure! If you don't mind maybe part of the video with the truck driving just not revving cause it sounds different under load. But that would be awesome thanks for the offer!

Just trying to decide if I should cut my glass pack off and use the flow master or sell it and make a little $ off it.

Ive got that cherry bomb glass pack on and it just sounds TOO much like a fart can and rpms over ~2k

Ive got a friend (he bought the other one) whose dad owns a shop and I can install it for free just like the glass pack.

Honestly I wouldn't take it to a shop unless you want to spend a few hundred. Jbimle just got a single in dual out with 2 new tail pipes done for 300. Thats to much for me when I can keep the stock stuff and spend less than 50 on a muffler, and essentially have the same thing.

ya i like it. it sounds good. for me personally i would like a more v8 sound but not to loud when people are in the truck don't have to scream to hear over it and ladies don't get annoyed by it on trips.

The shop that I am going to, I had a friend have his entire thing replace, cat back, for 70, then paid 30$ for a turn down just past the muffler.. dang does it sound good
