New build

Back from the dead...

I'm not changing the seat or the fork until they break, and I'm sure they won't.

Today I ran all my wiring.

Just need a spring for the front brake return, and I need to cough up the cash and have a set of wheels built.

So I left work early last night on account of a goop-filled eyeball (gross) and didn't want to wake the family early, so I went right into the garage and got to work. Both tires and wheels are mounted, and I've started working on the front suicide brake. It looks like I need to pick up a different spring and I'll be on my way!

Yeah, I'm waiting for clear weather. It's supposed to rain all week long, but there's a chance this Saturday will be dry.

I hope to pick up a new spring for the front brake return on Friday, shouldn't take but 30 minutes to install, then I'm hoping for a maiden voyage on Saturday. There will be pics and maybe a video or two.

To add to this, the only other things left to do are clean, install and oil the rear chain, clean, install and oil the front chain, charge and install the battery, check that all the nuts and bolts are tight, and maybe a little leather work...that can wait though.

I will say that storage wasn't kind to the paint job. Constantly moving this thing around and working on other projects around the bike means lots of dings and scuffs...my 10 foot paint job turned into a 20 foot paint job, but I really don't care. I think the flaws look good.

I'll also add that the front and rear tires are the same width and thickness, and while I think a taller and fatter rear tire would look great, I kind of dig how the skinny tires look.

I actually solved the kickstand dilemma yesterday but the rain moved back in before I could get pictures. It's not too far off from the brick, but it stores way better, haha.

Thank you!

I used the piece of seat tube I cut off to make a ring to wear while riding, haha...

And I've had this piece of spring steel for at least 20 years, my dad gave it to me. You wear it around your ankle to keep your pants out of the chain. Seems fitting for this bike

Added a small cheapo mirror:

Detail shot from the front coaster brake arm. This used to be a piece from an old fence gate latch:

The reflection in the headlight is fun to watch while riding:

I dig this out of the wreckage of an old 1940-something car and garbage dump found trashed in the woods:

I haven't been keeping up with this build here, but I've changed a few things around. I'll copy my update posts from my build thread over on RatRodBikes.

From August 14th:
Late last night I finally got around to trying a new rear tire on the bike. I stepped up from the skinny 26x1.75 to a chubbier 26x2.125 and I'm really digging the look. The added sidewall height makes the ride a bit cushier, too.

I also rotated the rear fender a bit more forwards so the tire fills it in better, and so it leaves less fender between the end of the seat and the top of the tire.

From September 5th:
Another small update: Yesterday I modified what I think is a flashlight mount, I turned it into a bottle holder for that little glass bottle I found. I had a hard time deciding where to put it, but this is what I've come up with for the time being.

I bent and reshaped the tabs on the mount to be flat instead of round, then wrapped it in leather. I also added some leather to the clamp area to protect my wonderful 20 foot paint job, heh

It's big enough that if I remove the bottle, I can drop my phone and a couple of keys in there, which is nice since the handlebar bag doesn't have any storage space.

I'm considering adding a few small cutaways to the leather, then putting some clear yellow or amber liquid in the bottle...you know, "holy water". That of course depends on how clean I can get the inside of the bottle. I have no idea what was originally in it, or what may have been in it after the fact.

And from yesterday:
I just can't seem to leave it alone...

Nothing too special...made a paper template, transferred it to masonite, cut and sanded, drilled some holes, freehanded the lettering with a Sharpie (both sides) then rubbed with used motor oil.
